Château Branaire-Ducru - 1 Chem. de Bourdieu, 33250 Saint-Julien-Beychevelle, Francia
You don't have to be a Premier Grand Cru to demonstrate the greatness of the Médoc. Duluc de Branaire, the second wine of Château Branaire-Ducru, is proof that even a ‘minor’ label can offer the quality and character of a great appellation like Saint-Julien, on the left bank of the Garonne. Here, between Margaux and Pauillac, the soil is particularly suited to vine cultivation thanks to the presence of quaternary gravel, which drains water well and forces the roots to go down deep. This controlled stress allows the plants to produce grapes that are more concentrated and rich in aromas. Duluc de Branaire is part of the AOC Saint-Julien, one of the smallest appellations in the Médoc, but also one of the most consistent in terms of quality. The vineyards from which this wine comes are cultivated with the same care given to the Grand Vin, but the selected grapes generally come from younger vines or from parcels that express a more immediate profile. The blend is classic for the area: 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, which gives structure and longevity; 28% Merlot, which softens and gives roundness; 4% Petit Verdot, to add colour and spice; and 3% Cabernet Franc, which completes the picture with floral elegance and freshness. After blending, the wine is aged for a few months in French oak barriques, only a small part of which are new, so as not to mask the varietal identity. Deep ruby red in colour, the nose has clear aromas of black and red fruit, blackcurrant, cherry and plum, as well as light notes of sweet spices. In the mouth it is full and harmonious, with a slightly tense beginning that relaxes with aeration. The sip is long, supported by an elegant and persistent fresh finish. Duluc de Branaire can be drunk young, even after just a few years, but it ages well for 10-15 years in the bottle, evolving towards more complex scents. Ideal with meat dishes such as roasts, grills, baked or braised lamb. Also excellent with aged cheeses or rich first courses such as lasagne or mushroom risotto.
Between Margaux and Pauillac, in the heart of the Médoc, lies Château Branaire-Ducru. This Quatrième Grand Cru Classé, in the 1855 classification, is renowned for producing elegant and complex wines, representative of the region's unique terroir. Its origins date back to 1680, when the royal notary Jean-Baptiste Braneyre acquired part of the Château Beychevelle property. In 1824, the Duluc family built the current château, and in 1857, Gustave Ducru, grandson of Louis Duluc, added his own name, giving rise to the current maison. Since 1988, the Maroteaux family has owned the estate, with Patrick Maroteaux leading significant innovations until 2017, when his son François-Xavier took over. Aware of the importance of sustainability, Château Branaire-Ducru obtained ISO 14001 certification in 2020 and level 3 of the ‘Haute Valeur Environnementale’ (HVE) certification in 2017. In 2023, it also received the ‘Cultivons Demain’ CSR label (level 2), integrating social and environmental dimensions into its economic strategy.
