Chateau du Glana - 33250 St Julien Beychevelle France
Today we are in the heart of the Médoc, in the renowned Saint-Julien. This area is distinguished by its extraordinary concentration of Grands Crus Classés, which account for around 90% of local production. Although it is one of the smallest AOCs (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) in Bordeaux, this region is renowned for the quality and elegance of its wines. This is where Pavillon du Glana, the second wine of Château du Glana, is produced. The estate is located along the famous Route des Grands Vins, opposite the prestigious Château Ducru-Beaucaillou. Produced mainly from Cabernet Sauvignon (65%) and Merlot (35%), the vines are rooted in gravelly soils typical of the region. These soils, formed over thousands of years by alluvial deposits from the Garonne, offer excellent drainage and optimal reflection of solar heat, ideal conditions for the ripening of the grapes. Traditional vinification with a touch of modernity, after a 48-hour cold pre-fermentation maceration, fermentation takes place in concrete and stainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation also takes place in vats, followed by 12 months of ageing in French oak barrels, of which between 15% and 40% are new, depending on the vintage. Intense ruby red in colour, the nose reveals complex aromas of ripe black fruits, such as blackcurrant and blackberry, accompanied by spicy notes and a touch of vanilla from the ageing in wood. On the palate, it is well-balanced, with soft tannins and a freshness that invites you to take another sip. Its elegant structure and aromatic persistence make it a pleasant wine both when young and after a few years of ageing. Even 10 or 15 years. As for food pairings, this red goes well with grilled red meats, roast lamb or duck dishes. It is also perfect with mature cheeses.
Located along the picturesque Route des Grands Vins, which runs along the Gironde estuary between the villages of Beychevelle and Saint-Julien, Château du Glana stands opposite the renowned Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, in the heart of the prestigious Saint-Julien appellation. This region boasts a concentration of 90% Grands Crus Classés, proof of the excellence of the local terroir. The history of Château du Glana began in 1870, when the architect Nadeau of Blaye designed the elegant residence on behalf of Monsieur Cayx. The building, characterised by a harmonious blend of white limestone and red brick, reflects the architectural style of the period. Initially, the property comprised a vineyard of only 5 hectares, created through the acquisition of plots belonging to the nearby Château Saint-Pierre. Over the years, several owners succeeded one another until 1961, when Gabriel Meffre, a well-known nurseryman from Vaucluse, bought the estate and, thanks to subsequent acquisitions of plots from Château Lagrange, expanded the vineyard to 43 hectares. Today, Château du Glana is managed by Jean-Paul Meffre and his sons, Ludovic and Julien, who share the ambition of fully exploiting the property's potential. The Château du Glana vineyard, covering 59.5 hectares, almost all of which are contiguous, is planted with vines with an average age of around 25 years.
