Merlot is one of the world's most popular black grape varieties, thanks to its ability to adapt to a wide range of soils and climates. It originates in the Gironde region of France, but in Italy it is grown mainly in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Veneto, Trentino and Tuscany. Often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, its complement, in what is known as a Bordeaux blend, Merlot is characterised by its roundness, persistent aromas and body.
