Castello Vicchiomaggio Via Vicchiomaggio, 4 - Greve in Chianti (SI)
In the lands of Chianti Classico, where the sun and the wind caress the vines, comes this 'FSM', a pure Merlot representing the highest expression of this grape variety in the Vicchiomaggio area. FSM' recalls the name of Federico Secondo Matta, the owner's son, to whom we owe the intuition to create a cru of the highest level. The Merlot grapes, in this case, grow on a clay soil, at an altitude of about 250 metres. Vineyards with a beautiful south-east exposure and a soil rich in skeleton that gives the grapes minerality. Harvesting is done manually, selecting only the best bunches, while vinification takes place in stainless steel tanks, with subsequent malolactic fermentation in wood. The wine then matures for about 16 months in French barriques, refining for a further year in the bottle. Intense ruby red in colour, with garnet hues, the nose reveals an intoxicating bouquet that ranges from ripe fruit to sweet spices and notes of tobacco and liquorice. In the mouth, it is soft and enveloping, with velvety tannins and a persistent, mineral finish. On the table, it goes perfectly with main courses of red meat, game and mature cheeses. A culinary experience of the highest level.
The origins of Castello Vicchiomaggio, initially named Vicchio dei Longobardi, date back to around 1400, as recorded on some ancient parchments still preserved today. We are on top of a hill that dominates the entire Greve Valley, about 18 kilometres from Florence. In its long and glorious history, many personalities have stayed at the Vicchiomaggio Castle, most notably Leonardo da Vinci, at the time when he painted his most famous masterpiece, the Mona Lisa. Today, John and Paola Matta are the owners of the castle. The estate covers about 140 hectares, of which 34 are planted with vines, 10 with olive trees, and the remainder is parkland. Sangiovese is the estate's most representative grape variety, a fundamental grape for the production of Chianti Classico. With it, however, Castello Vicchiomaggio also has other international grape varieties, such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. These varieties, in particular, are used for the production of IGT red wines. Mediterranean climate and typical soil rich in clay and large stones, the so-called Galestro, are the basic elements of the Castello's terroir.
