A tight, fresh Fontalloro with dark cherry, chocolate and toasted oak. Some walnut, too. It’s full-bodied, yet polished and structured. Sort of shy. But this will develop really nicely with some bottle age. Drink after 223.
The label reads Toscana IGT. But don't be misled. In fact Fontalloro is one of the most representative wines of the Fèlsina estate. 100% Sangiovese grapes from the vineyards in the upper part of the estate, in the Chianti Classico area, and partly from the Chianti Colli Senesi area, at altitudes between 330 and 400 metres above sea level. With a south-west exposure and different soils, partly rocky, partly calcareous and clayey or rich in sand, silt and marine sediments, Fontalloro has been produced continuously since 1983. Harvested by hand, at two different times, selecting only the best grapes, after crushing and destemming, fermentation begins at controlled temperature in steel tanks. Matured in new and first-passage French oak barriques, after about 18-22 months it is assembled and bottled. Then, before being put on sale, it rests in glass for at least another 8-12 months. Ruby red colour with good intensity, on the nose you can easily distinguish the typical notes of red and dark fruit, with accentuated sensations of tobacco and wet earth. In the mouth it reveals a good tannicity, with soft and pleasant tannins. Good consistency, structure and persistence. It is a wine born not to fear the passage of time. Excellent today, if well preserved, especially in the best vintages, it is able to mature slowly for many years.
The history of Fèlsina began in 1966, when Domenico Poggiali bought the farm and chose to invest in the quality of the wine. In the space of a few years, the number of hectares under vine grew to more than forty and the soul and organisation of the company changed. Located between the last offshoots of the Chianti mountains and the initial part of the Ombrone valley, today Fèlsina covers an area of about 600 hectares, 95 of which are vineyards. It produces vines capable of expressing the different particularities of the terroir of this corner of Tuscany. After all, the Fèlsina estates, developed over more than a thousand years, still constitute the basic cultivation unit of the work. And the main concern is the defence of the natural fertility of the soil, which is safeguarded by working in a context of experimentation that ranges from biodynamics to the most modern technologies and innovations made available worldwide. Thanks to this mentality, today at Fèlsina there are various clones of Sangiovese and rootstocks planted in very heterogeneous territories. This allows the winery's technicians to have, like painters, a palette of infinite shades and possibilities. In addition, there are woods, cereal fields, olive groves, scrub, ditches and streams, and the smaller fields of the hunting reserve cultivated with alfalfa, sainfoin, sorghum, sunflowers and field beans. Everything contributes to the preservation of biodiversity.
