    Maremma Toscana Sangiovese DOC 2019
  • A beautiful red wine of terroir. An organic wine from one of the most interesting wine-growing areas in Tuscany. We are talking about the Maremma Toscana DOC from Fattoria La Lecciaia. The Tuscan Maremma, after all, is an area that embodies the most authentic and wild essence of Tuscany. Situated between rolling hills and verdant valleys, this region is blessed with a unique microclimate, influenced by the proximity of the sea and the breezes that mitigate summer temperatures. This Maremma Toscana DOC, in particular, is the result of a meticulous selection of 100% Sangiovese grapes from different areas of the Maremma. The vines are trained using the spurred cordon system, to limit the yield and obtain concentrated, high quality bunches. Harvesting takes place between the end of September and the beginning of October. The subsequent vinification process takes place in temperature-controlled steel vats, where the must remains in contact with the skins for 15-20 days. During this phase, frequent pumping over is carried out, to best extract the aromas, colour and tannins from the skins. After fermentation, the wine is transferred to Slavonian oak barrels, where it matures for a minimum of 18 months. The result is a wine characterised by an intense ruby red colour with garnet hues. On the nose, the bouquet is rich and varied, with hints of berries such as blackberries and currants, interwoven with delicate spicy notes of black pepper and a light floral touch, typical of Sangiovese. In the mouth, the wine is pleasant and persistent, with a slightly pronounced but well-integrated tannicity that blends with the softness of the body and a finish that leaves an enveloping and lasting sensation. It is a wine that lends itself magnificently to being paired with red meats, such as a succulent Florentine steak, or with strong-flavoured mature cheeses, such as Tuscan pecorino.

La Lecciaia is a young farm that proudly operates in full respect of the ancient traditions of Brunello di Montalcino. It is located in Vallafrico, on the border of the oldest and most prestigious Ilcinese farms. The particular geographical position, the structure of the soil and the good microclimate are the ingredients that convinced Mauro Pacini to purchase the estate in 1983, immediately equipping it with the most advanced winemaking techniques. The estate covers 60 hectares and includes woods and olive groves, as well as 15 hectares of vineyards, more than half of which are registered for Brunello production. Over the last few years, the Pacini family has launched an ambitious viticultural development plan, focused on enhancing and diversifying the typicality of its Sangiovese terroirs, by initiating a micro-zoning and reasoned parcelling plan. Thus, old worthy vineyards are identified and worked separately. Where new vines had to be replanted, different clones of Sangiovese were chosen. To date, therefore, there are about 10 clones cultivated. And each of these makes (or will make) its contribution to the complexity of the Lecciaia wines. But the projects do not end here. Mauro Pacini and his team are in perpetual motion. There is no lack of ideas. Too bad that even in Montalcino there are only 24 hours in the day.
