Aromas of dried flowers, cranberries and lemon zest. It’s medium-bodied with creamy tannins. Rounded and juicy with a silky texture. Easy, fruity finish. Drink now.
Scorfano Rosso, Maremma Toscana DOC by Conti Guicciardini, is an unconventional red. It was born, in fact, to accompany intensely flavoured fish. But let us proceed with order. Along the coasts of the Tyrrhenian Sea, in Maremma, thanks to the presence of fishy coastal lagoons and hot, salty water springs, the ancient Romans were already breeding fish. And this Maremma red wine, thanks to its low alcohol content and barely perceptible tannin, lends itself perfectly to accompany it. This can already be guessed from its name. It is a particularly tasty and succulent type of fish that requires the pairing with a wine that is more full-bodied and sanguine than the classic whites that are suggested for seafood dishes. In this case the Sangiovese is harvested early and vinified with a very short maceration on the skins so as not to extract aggressive tannins and to limit the alcohol percentage. It is then repassed on the Alicante skins to acquire fragrance and roundness. Ruby in colour, on the nose it is easy to perceive notes of berries and floral scents. In the mouth it is fresh and then soft, with a pleasantly light body. An easy-drinking, tasty and undemanding wine. Also suitable for quick consumption, it also goes well with non-demanding dishes such as pizza and chopping boards. It should be served at room temperature or slightly chilled and goes well with all fish dishes, especially with cacciucco-type sauce, but also with first courses, pizza and charcuterie boards.
The Guicciardini, one of the oldest Florentine families, had a prominent position in the political, social and economic life of Florence since 1200. Their history is inextricably linked to that of the Castello di Poppiano, a medieval building erected around the year 1000 as a fortress to defend Florence from the outside. An act of inheritance from 1199 confirms that it has belonged to the Guicciardini family for at least nine centuries. Today, the castle is one of the most important realities of the 'Chianti Colli Fiorentini' DOCG. The good soils, locally called 'alberese', clayey but rich in skeleton and well drained, are the precondition for obtaining fine wines. The vinification cellar is adjacent to the castle, while the maturation cellar, in oak barrels and barriques, is located in the basement, where the optimum temperature is maintained naturally. Since 2015, Castello di Poppiano has also been joined by another estate, Belvedere-Campòli, in Chianti Classico. Then there is Massi di Mandorlaia, located in Maremma, in this case within the MoreIlino di Scansano appellation.
