Gorgona Rosso Costa Toscana IGT 2022

Costa Toscana IGT Rosso, Gorgona by Marchesi Frescobaldi is a wine that comes from a unique place: the island of Gorgona, the smallest of the Tuscan Archipelago. This red wine not only reflects the peculiarities of its maritime territory, but also represents an innovative social project. It is the result of a collaboration between the historic Frescobaldi family and the agricultural penal colony on the island. Located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, about 37 km from the Tuscan coast, the island of Gorgona is characterised by an uncontaminated environment, with sandy soil rich in minerals and a marine climate that positively influences viticulture. The vineyards are arranged like a natural amphitheatre, protected from the wind and excessive sunlight, creating ideal conditions for growing vines. Specifically, Gorgona is made from a blend of Sangiovese and Vermentino Nero. The grapes, harvested by hand by the inmates, are transported to the cellar where they undergo temperature-controlled fermentation with maceration on the skins. A particular feature of this wine is the ageing process: Gorgona, in fact, matures for over a year in terracotta jars. This traditional method allows the aromatic integrity of the wine to be preserved, while at the same time conferring a natural micro-oxygenation that enriches its complexity. An intense and brilliant red colour, the nose reveals a varied bouquet that ranges from Mediterranean herbs such as rosemary, lentisk and sage, to spices such as star anise, and fruity notes of blueberry, blackcurrant and blackberry. In the mouth it reveals an enveloping warmth, accompanied by a marked sapidity, characteristic of wines from maritime areas. The correspondence between the nose and the palate is remarkable, making the wine extremely harmonious and balanced. Try it with meat dishes, pasta with wild boar ragù or roast game.
