Let's start with the label. Costa Toscana IGT is a denomination that extends over a long strip of land of about 400 kilometres, encompassing the provinces of Massa-Carrara, Lucca, Pisa, Livorno and Grosseto. This is a varied wine-growing area rich in microclimates, where the sea breeze and the Tuscan sun create ideal conditions for growing vines. The one proposed here, in particular, is an organic red wine produced by the Piccini family, a winery that certainly needs no introduction. It comes from the Tenuta Moraia, in Maremma, where Sangiovese, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon are cultivated with care and respect for the environment. The grapes are vinified separately in stainless steel at a controlled temperature and then aged for 9 months in oak barrels. The result is an intense, complex red wine with aromas of ripe red fruit and earthy, spicy notes. Elegance and structure, these are its main characteristics. In the mouth it is warm and enveloping, with good acidity and soft tannins that balance the fruity character. It pairs well with traditional Tuscan meat dishes, pork and mature cheeses such as Tuscan pecorino.
They rightly call themselves 'The Italian wine family'. After all, what is now an enormous enterprise that revolves around the work of 7 wineries, in Tuscany but not only, and that is able to put millions of bottles of wine on the market every year, originates from a single small plot of land in Poggibonsi. It was purchased in 1882 by Angiolo Piccini who founded his own company with his wife, Maria Teresa Totti. From that small plot, 7 hectares in all, the first Chianti straw flasks were produced. The rest is history, work and commitment. Today, Mario Piccini, the fourth generation of the family, runs the company. With him are his sisters Martina and Elisa and his children Ginevra, Benedetta and Michelangelo, all personally involved in the company's activities. Five of the family's seven estates are cultivated according to organic farming principles.
