Today we find ourselves in the heart of Tuscany, specifically in San Miniato in the province of Pisa. This is the birthplace of Toscana Rosso IGT Terrazze di Pietro Beconcini, an organic wine that well represents the essence of the territory and the richness of its native vines. But let's proceed in order. San Miniato, located about 150 metres above sea level, is known for its unique soil that gives local wines a distinctive minerality and unmistakable aromatic complexity. It is not uncommon, when working in the vineyards, to come across ancient marine fossils, tangible evidence of the marine past of these lands. Terrazze is a blend of eight grape varieties: Malvasia Nera, Canaiolo and Colorino, Trebbiano Nero, Ciliegiolo, Gran Noir, Tempranillo and Buonamico. This unusual combination creates a rich and varied organoleptic profile, an authentic expression of the Tuscan winemaking tradition. The vinification process involves sequential fermentation of the grapes in the same cement tank, followed by maturation, again in cement, for 12 months. The use of this material allows for controlled micro-oxygenation, preserving the freshness and aromatic integrity of the wine, without external influences that could alter its character. Bright and transparent ruby red in colour, the nose offers a bouquet rich in botanical and balsamic scents, with fruity notes and hints of menthol that add freshness. In the mouth it is pleasant and immediately satisfying, characterised by a low alcohol content and soft tannins that make it balanced and harmonious. Thanks to its versatility, it can be served with a wide range of dishes. Perfect for aperitifs and simple foods, but also suitable for more complex dishes. Try it with Tuscan appetisers, pasta dishes with light sauces, white meats or soft cheeses.
The Pietro Beconcini farm is located in San Miniato, in the heart of Tuscany. Its history began in the 1950s, when the grandfather of the current owner, Leonardo Beconcini, managed to buy the land on which he worked as a sharecropper for the Marchesi Ridolfi family, thus becoming one of the first Tuscan farmers to leave the sharecropping system. Later, his son Pietro decided to dedicate himself entirely to the cultivation of vineyards and the production of wine, laying the foundations for the company we know today. One of the most fascinating aspects of the Beconcini winery is the introduction and promotion of Tempranillo, a typically Spanish grape variety, which has found a surprisingly congenial habitat in these lands. The discovery of ancient Tempranillo vines in San Miniato was unexpected and led the company to undertake a programme of research and experimentation. Today, thanks to its genetic characteristics, the Tempranillo of San Miniato produces very versatile grapes, suitable for long-aging wines that combine the typical softness of the vine with territorial characteristics such as Tuscan acidity and the flavour of calcareous soils. In addition to Tempranillo, however, the company also produces wines from traditional varieties, such as the ever-present Tuscan Sangiovese.
