Don't be surprised by the beautiful label of this wine. Bizarre images are a common denominator for all of Teruzzi's creativity. In this case it is a unicorn, a legendary animal par excellence, with the body of a horse and a single horn in the middle of its forehead. A symbol of wisdom and purity, strength and victory. Melograni is one of the few red wines offered by the San Gimignano winery. An interesting blend of Sangiovese, 85%, and Petit Verdot for the remainder. The grapes, delivered to the winery a few hours after harvesting, are carefully selected before being sent for processing. Only the best bunches, the healthiest and most intact ones, continue their journey. Alcoholic fermentation in 77 hectolitre truncated conical tanks at controlled temperature, after racking it matures for about 12 - 15 months in 5 hectolitre French oak tonneaux. Of these, only 10% are new, all the others are third or fourth passage. A further 5 months of ageing in tanks precedes bottling. Intense, brilliant ruby red in colour, this Tuscan reveals ample and persistent aromas, with hints of red fruit perfectly integrated with the woody note of the wood. The taste is full and intense, this wine is characterised by an excellent balance between sweetness and structure.
Teruzzi & Puthod, founded in 1974, is the most important company in the San Gimignano area of Tuscany. It was founded by Enrico Teruzzi, an engineer by profession but a winemaker by vocation, with the help of his wife Carmen Puthod. We find ourselves in the enchanting scenery of the Tuscan hills, in the shadow of the characteristic towers and the centuries-old history of San Gimignano. After all, the link with the territory and the enhancement of Vernaccia are the two cornerstones on which, for over half a century, the company's philosophy has been based. A winery that has always been at the forefront in the search for the most innovative solutions to produce the best wines, respecting the territory and the Tuscan winemaking tradition. Today the company can count on a total of 62 hectares of Vernaccia vineyards, boasting the largest extension dedicated to this renowned grape variety. Overall, however, Teruzzi covers an area of approximately 180 hectares, 96 of which are planted with vines. Spread over 4 macro plots, the Teruzzi properties are a guarantee of variety in terms of soils, altitudes, slopes and microclimates. A kaleidoscope of areas and sub-areas, plots and vineyards, capable of imprinting their mark on the wines, thanks also to the proximity of the Tyrrhenian Sea. In 2016 Teruzzi was acquired by Terra Moretti, the holding company of the Moretti family. Since then, the entire agronomic activity has been considerably modernised. No more chemical fertilisers, no more residual weeding, a 50% reduction in the use of pesticides and the redistribution in the vineyards, after a natural composting process, of the waste from the processing of marc and stalks. These, in short, are just some of the important changes made in the company. In order to continue to innovate, producing great wines and increasingly reducing its impact on the environment.
