The area of origin is that of Châteauneuf du Pape. So we are in the south of France, almost facing the Mediterranean. Wines here are often the result of a blend of several grapes and have a character all their own. Château Vaudieu is no exception. In this "rouge," red, the base is Grenache, 75 percent; the remainder is Syrah. Both varietals are typical of this area and both are able to impart a strong personality to the wines. "Infusion" maceration, followed by slow fermentation on the lees and gentle pumping over, this red matures for about 18 months in Burgundy barrels. The result is a glass characterized by a beautiful deep ruby color with deliciously fruity aromas. On the nose, in fact, it is easy to detect a subtle blend of raspberry and cocoa bean, followed by notes of smoke and roastiness. On the palate, the attack is fresh, with nice ripe tannins, a menthol note that evolves as the minutes pass into notes of graphite. A complex, full-bodied red that undoubtedly requires significant pairing. Excellent, for example, with soups or red meat main courses.
Château de Vaudieu, located in the heart of the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation, dates as far back as 1767. It was built by Admiral Gérin, a lieutenant in the Marseille Admiralty. Its name is almost certainly derived from "Val de Dieu," indicating the magnificent environment where it is located, suitable for the cultivation of quality grapes. A magnificent landscape where hills and terraces enjoy the best possible exposure. Today the chateau can count on a vineyard of about 70 hectares, at the center of which is a magnificent cedar of Lebanon, a "guest" of the Chateau since the 18th century. Since 1987 Château de Vaudieu has been managed by Sylviette Bréchet, joined over the years by her sons Laurent and Julien. Over time, the winery has been thoroughly modernized so that all the grapes from the 32 vineyard plots that have been re-delimited can be conveniently handled separately to get the best potential from each "terroir."
