Today we find ourselves in one of the most fascinating areas of France, the southern Rhône Valley, with its wines that are the result of blends born among rolling hills and the scents of the Mediterranean scrub. Here we find Plan de Dieu, a magical place with roots in centuries-old legends and winemaking traditions. This is where Camille Cayran's Côtes-du-Rhône Villages Plan de Dieu ‘Bête à Bon Dieu’ is produced, an organic wine with great character and personality. The name Plan de Dieu, ‘God's Plan’, dates back to the Middle Ages when this plain was crossed by wayfarers and pilgrims who, trusting in divine protection, travelled through these wild lands. Today it is recognised as a protected designation of origin (PDO) that covers about 1,500 hectares in the heart of the Rhone Valley. Bête à Bon Dieu, specifically, is a blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Carignan and 20% Syrah. The vinification process involves a long maceration period of 21 days, to extract the best aromatic compounds and tannins. The wine is then aged in neutral tanks, enhancing the intrinsic characteristics of the grape varieties and the terroir. It has a brilliant ruby colour with violet reflections. The bouquet is intense with notes of blackcurrant, cherry and violet, accompanied by hints of aromatic herbs typical of the Mediterranean maquis. In the mouth Bête à Bon Dieu is full-bodied and enveloping, with well-integrated tannins and a persistent finish reminiscent of sweet spices and ripe red fruits. Designed to be drunk young, within a few years of the harvest, this red wine goes well with rich and flavoursome dishes. Try it with a vegetable ratatouille, lamb tajine, or a succulent beef rib.
Founded in 1929, Cave de Cairanne is a renowned winery located in the heart of the Southern Rhône Valley Crus, in the department of Vaucluse, on the left bank of the Rhône. This cooperative boasts a rich history and a winemaking tradition that has been handed down for generations. The winery brings together 65 winegrowers who, with passion and dedication, cultivate around 550 hectares of vineyards to produce high quality wines. Despite its considerable size, the Cave de Cairanne maintains an authentic and human scale: a dozen winegrowers are responsible for 80% of the wine production. The cooperative's vineyards extend over 330 hectares and produce around 170,000 bottles annually. The grape varieties grown are mainly black grapes, with a clear predominance of Grenache and Syrah, which give the wines the distinctive character of the southern Rhône Valley. Alongside these, there are also other varieties such as Mourvèdre, Carignan and Cinsault. As for white grapes, the Cave de Cairanne cultivates Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Roussanne, Marsanne and Viognier.
