Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Beaune Rouge. This is basically a red wine, produced in the Côte d'Or region of Burgundy. As is customary in this area, it is made from Pinot Noir grapes, but from vineyards located at a higher altitude than the Côte de Beaune proper. Hautes Côtes de Beaune wines enjoy excellent value for money and are a good alternative to the more expensive Côte de Beaune wines. A fine example is this one from Domaine Gérard, made from grapes from the village of Meloisey. Here, the soil is composed of clay and limestone, perfect for growing Pinot Noir, and the vineyard is located at an altitude of around 400 metres. A hilly location that favours the perfect ripening of the grapes, thanks to a cool, breezy climate. The grapes, harvested by hand, are then vinified using traditional and sustainable methods. After processing, the wine undergoes a maturation period of approximately 12 months in second and third passage French oak barriques. An elegant and fresh wine, the nose reveals notes of red fruits such as raspberries, strawberries and berries. Then light floral and vinous notes, with a slight spiciness on the finish. The tannins are fine and soft and the wine provides excellent persistence and balance. Perfect for a thousand occasions, this Bourgogne Rouge goes well with any meat menu.
