Château Lagrange, Saint Julien Beychevelle, Francia
In the heart of the Médoc, the Bordeaux wine region famous for its prestigious red wines, lies the Saint-Julien appellation, one of the most renowned for the production of high quality wines. This territory, although the smallest of the Médoc, is famous for its extraordinary concentration of Grands Crus Classés. Its proximity to the Gironde estuary creates a microclimate ideal for viticulture, while the gravelly soils favour excellent drainage, perfect conditions for the cultivation of the noble Bordeaux grape varieties. Within this prestigious appellation, Château Lagrange stands out as a historical icon. Les Fiefs de Lagrange is the Château's second wine, made from vines with an average age of 30 years. The blend of Les Fiefs de Lagrange includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot, with proportions that can vary depending on the vintage. This combination gives the wine a balanced structure and a distinctive aromatic complexity. It starts with a meticulous selection of the grapes, which are harvested by hand and then undergo a double selection process: one by hand and one using a camera. The vinification takes place in 102 temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, corresponding to the same number of plots, allowing for extremely meticulous vinification. During fermentation, moderate daily pumping over, delestage or pigeage guarantee the right extraction of colour and aromas. Malolactic fermentation is carried out by co-inoculation. Finally, the wine is aged for 13 months in French oak barriques, 20% of which are new, giving elegance and complexity to the final product. Bright and intense red in colour, the nose reveals an intriguing bouquet with notes of red and black fruits, such as red and black currants, accompanied by spicy nuances. On the palate, the wine is distinguished by its enveloping roundness and harmonious structure. The tannins are dense but finely integrated, giving a velvety texture and a balance between the intensity of the fruit and elegance.
Today we take an imaginary journey to the heart of the prestigious Saint-Julien appellation, in the Médoc region, on the left bank of the Gironde. Here you'll find Château Lagrange, a wine icon classified as a 3ème Grand Cru Classé in 1855. This château boasts a rich and fascinating history dating back to the 16th century, when the property was known as the Seigneurie de Lagrange Monteil. Over the centuries, however, it has seen a succession of illustrious owners who have contributed to its development and the consolidation of its reputation. A significant moment in its history came in 1842, when Count Tanneguy Duchâtel, then Minister of the Interior under Louis Philippe I, acquired the estate. During his tenure, innovations such as the use of sulphur to combat powdery mildew and the installation of terracotta drainage systems to improve soil quality were introduced. He also had a Tuscan-style tower built by the architect Louis Visconti, which became a distinctive symbol of the château. The Château Lagrange vineyard covers 118 hectares, spread over two hills of Gunzian gravel, one of which is the highest point of the Saint-Julien AOC. This privileged position offers ideal conditions for growing vines. The philosophy of Château Lagrange is centred on the search for excellence through precision and innovation, always respecting tradition. Each plot of the vineyard is vinified separately in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, allowing micro-vinification that enhances the unique characteristics of each terroir. Since 1983, the property has been managed by the Japanese company Suntory, which has made significant investments to modernise the infrastructure and improve the quality of the wines. This commitment has led to a renaissance of the château, bringing it back to the top of Bordeaux wine production.
