Chateau Lafon Rochet
Saint-Estèphe, in the Médoc region, together with Pauillac, Saint-Julien and Margaux, is one of the four areas best known for the quality of its red wines, which are among the most renowned and sought-after in the world. The area is characterised by a soil particularly rich in gravel, sand and clay, which gives its wines a powerful structure and a distinctive character. This soil conformation means that Cabernet Sauvignon is generally the most representative grape variety in the area, with wines characterised by a tannic and robust profile. The Château Lafon-Rochet vineyard, in particular, has a composition, rich in gravel, that guarantees excellent drainage, with an abundant presence of clay that helps retain water and regulate water stress. 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, this Bordeaux red presents itself in the glass with a beautiful intense garnet red colour. The nose is concentrated and richly fruity, with notes of dark fruit and sweet spices. In the mouth, it is complex and balanced, lively but smooth. In other words, a great Saint-Estèphe wine. A red, let it be clear, that requires a long period of ageing to reach its full potential.
The origins of Château Lafon-Rochet date back to the 17th century. Located in the Saint-Estèphe appellation, Château Lafon-Rochet was awarded the title of Grand Cru Classé in 1855. Since 1960, the estate has changed hands several times. First it was bought by Guy Tesseron, who is credited with having relaunched the estate, taking Château Lafon-Rochet to the top of its appellation. From 2007, it was then the turn of Basile Tesseron, son of Michel Tesseron, who ran the estate until September 2021, when Jacky Lorenzetti, entrepreneur and founder of the Foncia Group, took over the estate to complete his Bordeaux 'portfolio'. The symbol of the estate is a beautiful country house, typical of the south-west of France, with a golden yellow colour. Its vineyard covers some 40 hectares, in a superb location, with vines averaging 38 years of age, planted on two hills with different terroirs.
