Chateau Cos D'Estournel
Saint-Estèphe is one of the four main sub-regions of the Bordeaux appellation. This area is known in particular for the production of high-quality red wines, characterised by a particular personality and style. This is due to the beautiful soils, composed of a combination of gravel, sand, clay and limestone, which favour drainage and proper ripening of the grapes. But also because of the climate, influenced by the proximity to the ocean, which brings a moderate maritime influence and ensures the right alternation between warm and cool. 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, this is the blend proposed by Cos d'Estournel for this Saint-Estèphe, a wine characterised by a beautiful, almost impenetrable deep red colour, with a broad bouquet that ranges from ripe red fruit to mineral notes and spices, such as cloves. In the mouth, it is appropriately full-bodied but not excessive. Perfectly balanced in all its components, this Bordeaux red reveals a pleasant tannicity. Good already today, this wine certainly does not fear spending a few years in the cellar. Well stored, this bottle will give us great satisfaction for years to come. To be uncorked when the evening's menu includes an ample display of red meats. A wine with great personality, it is truly a pleasure to drink.
Today, the Cos d'Estournel vineyard covers an area of 91 hectares. The soils here, rich in gravel, are ideal for the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon, which, not surprisingly, accounts for about 60 per cent of the estate's vineyard. The other half of the vineyard, on the other hand, is planted to Merlot. The percentage of these two varieties in the composition of the wines changes every year, mainly depending on the climate, which can influence the ripening of one or the other variety. The average age of the vines here is quite high, even over 35 years.
