Today, the Cos d'Estournel vineyard covers an area of 91 hectares. The soils here, rich in gravel, are ideal for the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon, which, not surprisingly, accounts for about 60 per cent of the estate's vineyard. The other half of the vineyard, on the other hand, is planted to Merlot. The percentage of these two varieties in the composition of the wines changes every year, mainly depending on the climate, which can influence the ripening of one or the other variety. The average age of the vines here is quite high, even over 35 years.
