Château Caronne Ste Gemme, 33112 St Laurent Médoc France
Château Caronne Sainte-Gemme lies on a unique terroir characterised by gravelly, clayey soils, typical for the Médoc. This guarantees excellent drainage and, above all, allows the roots of the vines to sink in deeply, giving the wine structure and elegance. Specifically, the blend of Château Caronne Sainte-Gemme is composed of Cabernet Sauvignon in large majority, with Merlot bringing softness and roundness and a small part of Petit Verdot adding spice and aromatic depth. The grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness to ensure maximum quality. After a light crushing, the must is fermented in temperature-controlled vats. The initial cold maceration enhances the fruity aromas, while fermentation with pumping-over, punching-down and délestage favours the extraction of colour, aromas and tannins in a balanced manner. This is followed by malolactic fermentation, which gives the wine softness, and 12 months of ageing in French oak barrels (at least 20% of which are new), which lends complexity and a pleasantly spicy touch. Intense purple in colour, the nose reveals an elegant bouquet with notes of blackberries, blueberries and black pepper. In the mouth, the tannic texture is well defined, balanced by lively acidity and an enveloping body. The finish is long, with hints of ripe fruit and sweet spices. Thanks to its fine structure and maturation in wood, Château Caronne Sainte-Gemme has a good capacity for ageing. Good already today, in the cellar it can evolve well for 8 to 10 years. On the table, it is perfect with red meats, grilled meats and roasts. Also excellent with mushroom dishes.
Nestled in the heart of the Haut-Médoc, Château Caronne Sainte-Gemme, this domaine is located to the south of the prestigious Saint-Julien estates. Its origins date back to the 17th century, when the first documents attest to the cultivation of vines on these lands. The name ‘Caronne’ comes from the Gallic word ‘Carona’, meaning ‘small spring’, while ‘Sainte-Gemme’ is a linguistic evolution of the name Saint-Jaime, linked to historical maps from the 18th century. The history of the estate is linked to the traditions of the medieval pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. Wayfarers, after crossing the estuary from Blaye, would find a resting place here before venturing into the Landes. During the French Revolution, the local parish was suppressed, but it was during this period that Caronne's wine vocation was consolidated. Since 1900, the estate has been managed by the Borie family, with the current generation represented by Jean and François Nony, who continue to enhance the domaine's potential. In recent years, the company has invested in new technologies: a modern vinification unit, the renovation of the cellars and a temperature-controlled storage area. These improvements reflect the constant commitment to excellence and respect for tradition.
