This is a new wine from Feudo Principi di Butera. Made with red Nero d'Avola grapes (fermented off the skins as a white wine), the NV Neroluce reminds me of a Prosecco. That might not be a coincidence, since this estate is owned by one of Northern Italy's biggest producers of the informal Italian bubbly (the Zonin family). This wine opens to a luminous, transparent appearance with mild aromas of white flower and Golden Delicious apple. There is tart acidity and bitter almond on the close.

Neroluce Brut Nero d'Avola Sicilia DOC
  • The name Neroluce represents an apt play on words. A perfect mix between Nero d'Avola, the native grape used in this case in purity, and the brightness that the wine emanates from the glass thanks to the fine perlage. In fact, this is one of the most interesting experiments that the Feudi Principi di Butera winery has undertaken. A sparkling wine, Charmat method, produced with a grape that tastes of Sicily and that almost nobody, for now, would have associated with a white bubble. A perfectly successful experiment. In the glass it is a typical straw colour and a medium-sized perlage with good persistence. On the nose, floral notes and important memories of fresh fruit. In the mouth it is light and well balanced. A simple but not ordinary wine that is always extremely enjoyable.
Sicilian, or rather very Sicilian, the Feudo Principi di Butera winery actually belongs to the large Venetian group Zonin1821. It is located in the province of Caltanisetta, one of the most suitable territories for the production of Nero d'Avola. Here, in fact, the island's hot climate is mitigated by frequent sea breezes that help lower the daytime temperatures, giving respite to the grapes that reach perfect ripeness without losing their natural acidity. The Zonin family has established its Sicilian headquarters in a perfectly restored ancient feud. The vineyards extend over about 180 hectares of property, between 250 and 350 metres above sea level. Low yields and extensive use of indigenous grapes, including Nero d'Avola, Grillo and Inzolia. Obviously, there is also no lack of international vines that are better suited to living in such a hot environment. The production of still wines is superb, but also that of unusual bubbles.
