The history of this sparkling wine produced by Contratto is curious. "For England", in fact, was made around 1920 specifically for the English market. The aim was to meet the tastes of enthusiasts across the Channel with a pleasantly dry bubble. The success of the new product, however, meant that after a few years, between 1950 and 1960 to be exact, it was also introduced to the Italian market, where it immediately met with public approval. For England Blanc de Noir comes from a pure processing of Pinot Noir grapes, harvested in the vineyards owned by Contratto in Bossolasco. Produced with the classic method, the sparkling wine rests on the lees for a good 42 months before disgorging, thus developing perfumes and aromas of great pleasantness and complexity. Intense yellow in colour with copper highlights, For England Blanc de Noir reveals a fine and elegant perlage right from the start, and for several seconds. On the nose, hints of pink grapefruit, brioche and thyme, on the palate, however, it is complex and pleasantly structured. The finish, fresh and persistent, makes it an ideal companion for lunches and dinners. Try it with a tasty risotto with porcini mushrooms.
Giuseppe Contratto founded his winery in 1867, vinifying Moscato grapes from the Monferrato area and producing one of the first Italian sparkling wines re-fermented in the bottle. Also in those years, the Contratto family began the construction of the historic winery, which was completed at the beginning of the twentieth century. From one result to the next, and from one market to the next, the Contratto winery has now passed the 120-year mark. In the meantime, the Contratto family was succeeded by the Bocchino family, already owners of the distillery of the same name, who invested in the relaunch of the company and began an important collaboration with Giorgio Rivetti, who had always been a great lover of Champagne. In 2011, the Rivetti family acquired the winery, giving new impetus to the production of quality sparkling wines and officially joining the Consorzio Alta Langa, becoming a point of reference for the entire denomination. In 2014, the historic Wine Cathedral of Contratto was officially declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This evocative place, rich in history, is still the scene of the long bottle-ageing of classic method sparkling wines.
