Château L'Evangile, 2 Chem. de Maillet, 33500 Pomerol, Francia
Château L'Evangile is located in the heart of Pomerol and this wine, the fruit of an exceptional terroir and a meticulous production process, represents one of its purest and most refined expressions. Here, Merlot dominates with around 92% of the blend. With him a small percentage of Cabernet Franc. The vineyard of Château L'Evangile is rooted in a soil rich in sand and clay, with gravel deposits. Beneath this surface, there is the famous layer of ‘crasse de fer’, a particular formation of iron-rich clay that gives Pomerol wines their characteristic power, depth and ageing capacity. Merlot expresses all its roundness, softness and aromatic richness here, giving the wine a silky structure and an enveloping palate. The small percentage of Cabernet Franc, however, plays a fundamental role. It adds freshness, acidity and a touch of spiciness that contributes to the wine's complexity. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled cement vats, lasting about 10 days. Each plot is vinified separately, with pumping over and maceration times adapted to the specific characteristics of the terroir and the maturity of the tannins. Malolactic fermentation then takes place, in new oak barrels, followed by 18 months of ageing. In the Château L'Evangile glass, it has a dark, dense colour, enhanced by violet reflections that indicate its youth and vitality. On the nose, it is striking for its intensity and depth, thanks to a rich bouquet of fresh black fruit, such as blackberry and plum, accompanied by subtle notes of spice and toastiness from the ageing in wood. In the mouth it is generous and full, with a perfectly balanced tannic structure. The finish is long and velvety, with ripe tannins that leave a soft, enveloping sensation. As far as food pairings are concerned, this Pomerol pairs beautifully with succulent red meats. Excellent with a grilled rib of beef or a fillet of veal. It has enough character to also hold its own with more savoury game dishes, wild boar or duck.
Founded in the mid-18th century by the Léglise family of Libourne, Château l'Evangile made a decisive contribution to the birth and development of the Pomerol vineyard, now considered one of the world's most renowned appellations for the production of top-quality red wines. Together with other historic families in the area, such as the Arnaud family of Petrus, the Conseillant family of La Conseillante and the Giraud family of Trotanoy, the Léglises laid the foundations for a winemaking tradition that still represents global excellence. Originally known as Fazilleau, the estate took on the name Château l'Evangile in the early 19th century. In 1862, the estate was acquired by Paul Chaperon and later by the Ducasse family, who retained ownership until 1990. In recent decades, Château l'Evangile has gradually been taken over by the prestigious team of Lafite Rothschild, a name that needs no introduction in the wine world. The vines grown at Château l'Evangile are typical of the Pomerol terroir, with a clear predominance of Merlot.
