The Moscato di Trani DOC ‘Dulcis in Fundo’ by Torrevento is a really interesting sweet wine. It is made from grapes harvested in the Pedale district, in the heart of the Murgia, a karst plateau that extends between the provinces of Bari and Barletta-Andria-Trani. This area is characterised by medium-textured alluvial soil, with vineyards located at an altitude of about 300 metres above sea level. The proximity to Castel del Monte, the famous 13th century octagonal castle and UNESCO World Heritage Site, adds to the charm of the territory, offering a perfect combination of nature and culture. Moscato di Trani DOC is one of the historic Apulian denominations, officially recognised in 1974. This naturally sweet wine is made from Moscato grapes, known for their aromatic qualities and sweetness. The ‘Dulcis in Fundo’, 100% Moscato Reale di Trani, an indigenous variety, is appreciated for its floral and fruity notes. The harvest takes place in the last ten days of September, when the grapes have reached a slight over-ripeness on the plant. After a soft pressing, the must ferments at a controlled temperature. This process is interrupted to preserve a natural residual sugar of about 70 grams per litre. The wine is then aged in steel for 8 months, thus maintaining the freshness and integrity of the varietal aromas. In the glass, the ‘Dulcis in Fundo’ has a straw yellow colour with golden reflections, which tend to become more accentuated with ageing. The bouquet is intense and characteristic, with hints of exotic fruit and floral notes typical of Moscato. In the mouth it is sweet but well balanced and offers a pleasant freshness that invites you to take the next sip. Dulcis in Fundo is perfect with biscuits, tarts and almond-based desserts, typical of the Apulian tradition. Its balanced sweetness and freshness make it a perfect companion for desserts that are not too sweet, enhancing the flavours without overpowering them.
The history of Torrevento began over a century ago. In 1913, Francesco Liantonio, grandfather of the current president, embarked on the ship ‘Hamburg’ bound for New York at the age of sixteen, in search of fortune. In the United States, selling ice on the street, he managed to build up a small fortune that allowed him, in 1923, to return to his beloved Puglia. He settled in Palo del Colle and started producing and selling extra virgin olive oil and processing grapes. In 1948 the Liantonio brothers bought a former 17th century Benedictine monastery and 57 hectares of surrounding vineyards in the ‘Torre del Vento’ district, in the heart of the Murgia region of Bari. Then, in 1950, Gaetano Liantonio inherited the estate, renovated it and founded the ‘Vinicola Torrevento’, which became a limited liability company in 1989. The winery specialises in the production of Castel del Monte DOC wines and was one of the ‘pioneers’ in the rediscovery of Nero di Troia. Today Torrevento manages over 500 hectares of vineyards in Puglia, pursuing a balance between innovation and tradition. The winery bases its development on research, sustainability and quality, values that have guided the founders in creating excellent wines that represent the culture and flavours of Puglia.
