The Vin Santo del Chianti DOC Quaranta Altari is one of the good wines produced by the historic family of the Marchesi Frescobaldi. It comes from the Chianti hills, with their beautiful rolling landscape and vineyards as far as the eye can see. A region famous for the production of high quality wines, the Chianti area offers a unique terroir thanks to its temperate climate and mineral-rich soil. It is said that the particular name derives from an ancient local tradition, according to which ‘forty altars’ were erected in the churches of the area during particular religious festivities, symbolising devotion and community. According to the regulations, the grapes used to produce Vin Santo must come exclusively from vineyards located in the Chianti area, and the production must follow traditional methods that include drying the grapes and a long ageing process in small wooden barrels. Quaranta Altari, in particular, is obtained from a blend of Trebbiano Toscano and Malvasia Bianca Lunga, native vines that give the wine unique characteristics. Trebbiano Toscano brings freshness and structure, while Malvasia Bianca Lunga gives it aroma and smoothness. This balanced combination makes Vin Santo harmonious and complex, capable of evolving over time while maintaining its elegance. Visually, the wine has a bright golden colour with amber reflections, indicating its maturity and concentration. On the nose, it offers a rich and complex bouquet, with notes of dried fruit, candied fruit and sweet spices. In the mouth it is enveloping, warm and round, with a good acidity that balances the sweetness. The finish is long and persistent, leaving a pleasant sensation of elegance and harmony in the mouth. Traditionally, Vin Santo del Chianti is served at the end of a meal. Excellent with classic almond biscotti or, for a more indulgent pairing, even with blue cheeses. It's also perfect as a wine for sipping.
