      "Sotamà" Alpi Retiche IGT 2019
    • It is called Sotamà and is an IGT Terrazze Retiche from Sondrio. It is offered by Rivetti & Lauro, a fine Valtellina winery that has in its DNA the pleasure of experimentation. This red is no exception, which to a strongly territorial base represented by a mountain Nebbiolo, the so-called Chiavennasca variety, combines a great international of French origin, Shiraz (or Syrah). Soils composed of sand and clay and the cool but sunny climate of the area between Sondrio and Teglio create an ideal habitat for the growth of this variety, which is harvested and selected by hand after reaching perfect ripeness. Conferred at the winery, the grapes are immediately subjected to crushing and destemming followed by fermentation in small stainless steel tanks. At the end of processing, the wine is passed into 30-hectoliter barrels, tonneaux and second-passage French oak barriques for the necessary period of maturation. Twelve months at least during which the two varieties have a chance to integrate perfectly and smooth out the sharp edges typical of young wines. Deep ruby red, this Sotamà reveals itself to be a wine characterized by a persuasive bouquet of vanilla and red fruits. In the mouth, however, it turns out to be a beautiful full-bodied and fresh red, with an immediate and easy drinkability. Excellent with dishes of the typical cuisine of the valley, this red accompanies with simplicity and pleasantness main courses of red meat or polenta with gravies.

Rivetti & Lauro is a beautiful winery born from an idea of Alberto Rivetti and Dino Lauro, together to give life to a modern winemaking project. New agronomic techniques in harmony with the environment, attention to detail and ancient craftsmanship allow the two entrepreneurial friends to harvest superior quality grapes year after year. What they certainly do not lack is a good dose of courage, necessary to choose to grow Nebbiolo grapes, here called Chiavennasca, on the steep slopes of the Rhaetian Alps. In this remote corner of Lombardy, each row of vines is rooted in small plots of earthen soil painstakingly wrested from the mountain thanks to typical terracing built over the years. Instead, the winery's headquarters are in Palazzo Torelli, in a beautiful building located in Tirano's historic center. Here the wines mature slowly, until they reach the right complexity. After much effort and years of waiting, the effort of the winemakers is amply repaid the moment the first bottle is uncorked to pour a glass.
