Sassella is the most historic and famous sub-zone of Valtellina Superiore. We are located west of Sondrio for a total of just over 110 hectares. It is an impervious and rather sunny area, whose name derives from that of the Marian sanctuary that rises on the spectacular Sassella cliff. Here Nebbiolo, or rather Chiavennasca, grows well and gives life to wines of great finesse and complexity. A bit like this Sommarovina proposed by Mamete Prevostini. A good wine, without excess. A goblet that can be enjoyed on a thousand occasions. Provided, of course, that the table is dominated by a meat-based menu or a tasty and gratifying dish such as pizzoccheri, seasoned as per tradition with lots of butter and local cheeses. The processing of the wine is simple but accurate. After vinification and malolactic fermentation, the wine is left to mature in oak barrels for just under a year. Then in the bottle for about the same amount of time to give it time to reach the right balance. Time well spent, you might say. Given that in the glass you discover a wine characterized by a beautiful intense ruby red, garnet-like colour. The nose hints of red fruits, hibiscus and rose, well supported by an intense balsamic and spicy sensation. In the mouth it is warm, persistent and elegant with a pleasant finish of liquorice and almond. A wine with character, austere and compact.
A beautiful story, that of the Mamete Prevostini Winery. A story made of passion for a unique territory, such as the Valtellina, and of a vine that, here as elsewhere, has the ability to give life to extraordinary wines. We are obviously talking about Nebbiolo, which in these parts is called Chiavennasca. The original Mamete Prevostini, grandfather of the current owner of the company, began to produce wine immediately after the end of the WWI. It did so by exploiting an ancient crotto, a natural cave that has always been used as a cellar in the Chiavenna Valley. But it wasn't until 1995 that his grandson made his debut with a real quality production for the market. Today the winery can count on a total of 20 hectares of vineyards, of which 8 are owned and the remaining 12 are rented. Mamete Prevostini's wines, which have been recognised by critics and international wine guides, undoubtedly represent a point of reference for the entire area.
