A high-altitude Nebbiolo. Sandro Fay's Sforzato di Valtellina DOCG Ronco del Picchio comes from the heart of one of the most fascinating wine regions in Northern Italy. The grapes come from the San Gervasio vineyard, located about 700 metres above sea level in the commune of Teglio. A privileged position, among the highest in the area, from which come grapes capable of expressing intensity and character. The name of the wine recalls the small wood near the vineyard, habitat of numerous woodpeckers and symbol of a deep bond with the surrounding nature. The Sforzato di Valtellina DOCG appellation is reserved for wines made from Nebbiolo, or rather Chiavennasca, grapes that undergo a natural drying process, a technique similar to that of the famous Amarone, here enhanced by the special Alpine climatic conditions: cool nights and sunny days. Harvesting takes place at the beginning of October, carefully selecting healthy, ripe bunches of grapes, which are then left to dry in crates until mid-December. This process concentrates sugars and aromas, giving the wine complexity and intensity. After alcoholic fermentation in steel tanks, the wine matures for no less than 24 months in large oak barrels before bottling. Ronco del Picchio presents itself in the glass of a beautiful intense garnet red colour, with a rich and complex olfactory profile. Notes of dried fruit, figs, sweet spices and a slight balsamic hint. In the mouth it is structured and enveloping, with soft tannins and a long persistence that recalls the mineral character of the soil. On the table Ronco del Picchio is ideal with robust and tasty dishes. Try it, for example, with braised meats, game or mature cheeses. Also excellent ‘for meditation’, to appreciate its complexity.
The Valtellina, with its important reds, is one of the most fascinating areas in Italy. Here, among the historic names, that of Sandro Fay, owner of a fine family winery, founded in 1973, also shines. The starting point is a small family wine production that has gradually developed over the years to become one of the most interesting realities in the area. A strictly family-run business, since 1998 the fortunes of the winery have also been entrusted to the children, Marco and Elena, who continue their father's work, enhancing the Valgella sub-zone in particular, where almost all the winery's production is concentrated. Valgella, one of the five sub-zones of Valtellina Superiore DOCG, covers 137 hectares in the commune of Teglio. The name derives from ‘Valgel’, a dialectal form to indicate the small streams that characterise the area. Here Sandro Fay manages vineyards covering a total area of around 15 hectares.
