Valtellina Superiore Sassella DOCG Il Glicine, this interesting red wine owes its name to the climbing plant that graces the rocky spur above the vineyard of the same name. This plot, located about 470 metres above sea level, lies in the heart of the Sassella sub-zone, in the commune of Sondrio. This area is famous for its terraced vineyards, supported by traditional dry stone walls, which are not only a work of agricultural engineering but also a UNESCO heritage site. The Sassella sub-zone, in particular, is among the oldest and most renowned of the Valtellina Superiore DOCG. Here, the vines cling to the slopes of the Rhaetian Alps, benefiting from a position well exposed to the sun and a unique microclimate, mitigated by the cool breeze coming down from the mountains. The grapes, harvested in the second half of October, are brought to the cellar in crates to preserve their integrity. Here vinification begins with alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation in small 500-litre oak barrels. The wine then matures for about 12 months, developing balance and structure. Intense garnet red, the nose releases complex and enveloping aromas. Ripe red fruits such as cherry and raspberry, violets, spices and balsamic hints. With age, tertiary notes of leather and tobacco emerge. The palate is structured and balanced, with tannins present but soft, balanced by the freshness of its natural acidity. On the table, Il Glicine goes well with meat dishes such as braised, stewed and roasted meats, but also with mature cheeses. It is also excellent with the strong flavours of Valtellina cuisine, such as pizzoccheri or bresaola.
The Valtellina, with its important reds, is one of the most fascinating areas in Italy. Here, among the historic names, that of Sandro Fay, owner of a fine family winery, founded in 1973, also shines. The starting point is a small family wine production that has gradually developed over the years to become one of the most interesting realities in the area. A strictly family-run business, since 1998 the fortunes of the winery have also been entrusted to the children, Marco and Elena, who continue their father's work, enhancing the Valgella sub-zone in particular, where almost all the winery's production is concentrated. Valgella, one of the five sub-zones of Valtellina Superiore DOCG, covers 137 hectares in the commune of Teglio. The name derives from ‘Valgel’, a dialectal form to indicate the small streams that characterise the area. Here Sandro Fay manages vineyards covering a total area of around 15 hectares.
