Let the name not mislead. In this case, in fact, the name Prugnolo does not refer to one of the best-known varieties of Sangiovese grosso (Prugnolo Gentile) but to a decorative shrub that grows near vineyards. The Prunus Spinosa, has blue-violet berries that ripen in autumn, around harvest time. This Valtellina Superiore DOCG from the Valgella subzone is made from pure Nebbiolo, or rather Chiavennasca. Aged in small oak barrels in which the "Sfursat" was previously refined, it is an extremely enjoyable red wine right from its youth. Ruby red in colour, the nose reveals hints of plum and small red fruits. Soft, rounded and above all an excellently drinkable wine, it is a particularly versatile glass. Paired with the most classic of regional first courses, pizzoccheri, it expresses its full potential. For those who do not have the opportunity to prepare such an elaborate dish, however, this Prugnolo can still give great satisfaction. Even a simple platter of cold meats and cheeses or a tasty dish of ravioli with meat sauce is enough.
Aldo Rainoldi began his profession as a wine merchant in Chiuro, in the heart of the Valtellina, in 1925. We are living in a dark period. A time when those who could leave the valley to seek their fortune elsewhere. There is no work and life is definitely hard. Fortunately, Aldo's fortunes seemed to be going in a different direction, so much so that in the mid-1950s his son Giuseppe decided to join him in the family business. The turning point came when the decision was made to stop buying wine and buy grapes directly to produce it according to one's own taste. This was also the moment when they began to sell the wine in bottles and no longer in chestnut barrels. The direct consequence was an expansion of the market, first in Italy and then abroad. At the end of the 1990s, a new Aldo joined the company. He is the grandson of Giuseppe, in the sign of family continuity. Today Rainoldi is one of the most appreciated wine cellars in Valtellina.
