      Inferno Valtellina Superiore DOCG 2021
    • Inferno Valtellina Superiore DOCG by Triacca. An intense and complex red wine that comes from the heart of Lombardy, from Villa di Tirano, in the province of Sondrio. Valtellina, with its steep terraces and vineyards clinging to the slopes of the Rhaetian Alps, is a territory of rare beauty and great winemaking tradition. The Inferno area, in particular, is a sub-area of Valtellina Superiore DOCG, characterised by a particularly warm microclimate and extreme slopes, which make wine-growing a heroic undertaking. The scarcity of humus and the particular composition of the soil favour the concentration of wine aromas. A curiosity. In addition to the ‘Inferno’ sub-zone, Valtellina also includes the sub-zones of Sassella, Grumello, Valgella and Maroggia. Each sub-zone has its own peculiarities, but they all use the Nebbiolo vine, locally called Chiavennasca, as the basis for wine production. This noble and austere vine is the soul of Valtellina and gives the wine structure, elegance and a great capacity for ageing. The vinification begins with maceration on the skins, which lasts 12-15 days in 130-hectolitre stainless steel fermenters with automatic plungers. This allows for the best extraction of colour, aromas and tannins. The wine is then aged in oak barrels for a minimum of 12 months, to soften the tannins and give the wine complexity and finesse. Ruby red colour tending to garnet, a sign of good maturation, the nose is subtle and intense, with nuances of dried rose and hazelnut, typical of Nebbiolo. In the mouth it is dry, austere, slightly tannic but at the same time velvety and aromatic, with a long finish. It can be kept in the cellar for 10 years or more, evolving and developing complexity and finesse over time. Its structure and tannins make it perfect to accompany rich and flavourful dishes.

Triacca is a historic family-run company based in Campascio, in the Valposchiavo valley in Switzerland. The vineyards, and the cellars, however, are in Italy. In particular La Gatta in Valtellina, La Madonnina in Chianti Classico, and Santavenere in Montepulciano. Wine producers since 1897, Triacca wines regularly obtain excellent scores in the most renowned wine guides. Today the company is run by brothers Giovanni and Luca, members of the fourth generation. Luca is the oenologist and is responsible for wine production. Giovanni manages the parent company. With them, uncle Rino, the ‘old guard’, who still welcomes visitors to La Gatta with his well-known kindness and passion.
