Producted in Italy
Originally bottled by Piazzo Comm. Armando - Alba - Italy
The grapes used to make this Barolo DOCG come from a single vineyard called Sottocastello di Novello. Obviously it is a pure Nebbiolo, according to the regulations, which ripens late, even in the second ten days of October. After all, that's the way Nebbiolo is, it likes to be waited for and keeps the producers in suspense for a long time, looking up to the sky and hoping that the good weather will hold out just long enough not to ruin the entire production. After pressing the grapes, fermentation and maceration in stainless steel tanks, this Barolo DOCG evolves for at least 18 months in barriques, followed by a few months of refinement in the bottle in the underground cellars. A bold and compact ruby red, with garnet reflections that tend towards orange over time, the bouquet is intense and broad. There are fruity notes of jam, dried plums and cherries in alcohol alongside spicy sensations of cinnamon, vanilla and tar. In the mouth it is rich in structure, with a long aromatic persistence. Its tannin envelops the mouth and makes it the right wine to serve when main courses of red meat, such as braised meats and medium to mature cheeses, come to the table.
The valorisation of Nebbiolo and its ageing potential is one of the founding objectives of the Piazzo family's Alba estate. Something that might seem obvious today but which at the time, in the 1960s, turned out to be a very important intuition. These were the times, in fact, when Nebbiolo was preferred to other more sought-after and therefore more profitable varieties. The cultivated farms are located in different areas of the Langhe and Roero, with vineyards ranging from Barbaresco to Barolo, including the most typical varieties of the area. Over the years, under the guidance first of the founder Armando and his wife Gemma, then of his daughter Marina and her husband Franco, and finally of his grandchildren Simone and Marco, the Piazzo Comm. Armando winery has made respect for the territory, the diffusion of Piedmontese culture and the continuous search for improvement its true cornerstones. The result is wines with a strong territorial character that have not struggled to achieve excellent results on all markets around the world.
