DAMILANO AZIENDA AGRICOLA S.r.l – Via Roma 31-12060 Barolo (CN)
The Damilano 2018 Barolo Brunate is immediately lively and polished, and it is a charmer. I found this expression to be especially bright and intense, even at this early stage. It offers a pretty medley of wild cherry and earthy tones with spice, licorice and camphor ash. The mouthfeel is polished and smooth. The only element out of place is the high 15% alcohol content, but unfortunately, this is a trend that we see across this vintage and across the appellation. It's certainly not limited to this 2,900-bottle production.
Aromas and flavors of red berries and goji berries, with hints of red tile and black cardamom. Medium-bodied with a tasty palate and lightly firm tannins that allow the fruit to travel a while. Lacks a bit of mid-palate intensity, but the flavors are endearing. Drinkable now, but best from 223.
Eucalyptus, star anise and violet aromas mingle with whiffs of dark spice on this full-bodied red. Concentrated and enveloping, the dense palate offers dried cherry, blackberry jam and ground clove alongside polished tannins the warmth of alcohol. It's already accessible but will also offer several more years of pleasure. Drink 2023–2029. KERIN O’KEEFE
Those who drink Barolo, and do so with knowledge, are not easily satisfied. Most experts, in fact, look in a Barolo for the typicality of the soil and environment from which the grapes come. And this is why years ago, the first in Italy, those in charge of the denomination created the so-called MGA, or Additional Geographical Mentions, which indicate the precise provenance, the vineyard, from which the grapes used to produce that particular Barolo come. In this case, the name of the vineyard is Brunate, and it is one of the finest in the entire denomination. Actually, what few people know, the original name of this vineyard is Brinate, changed at some point to Brunate, who knows when and who knows why. Damilano offers this label among the cru that make up its range. A Barolo that, in its youth, is characterised by distinct violet aromas, balsamic scents and hints of small red fruits that are accompanied by pleasant aromas of spices such as cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg. With maturity, these sensations evolve into notes of tobacco, rose and liquorice. And, in great vintages, even truffle. Fineness and elegance, inevitable in a great Langa red like this, derive from the alkalinity and the presence of calcium in the soil. Intense, elegant and persistent, this Barolo should be sipped slowly, pairing it with traditional dishes based on game. It is also excellent with a first course of egg pasta with meat sauce.
Damilano is one of Barolo's historic wineries with ancient traditions. Over a hundred years old, even. In fact, the Damilano family's activity dates back to 1890, when Giuseppe Borgogno, great-grandfather of the current owners, began cultivating and vinifying the grapes he owned in the commune of Barolo. However, it was with the next generation, with Giacomo Damilano, the founder's son-in-law, that the winery took on its current name. Since 1997, his grandsons have been at the helm of the fine Langa winery. Guido, Mario and Paolo Damilano carry on the work of their ancestors with commitment, making the most of the Langhe's main grape variety, Nebbiolo, and the most suitable vineyards. But the secret of the high quality of Damilano wines is to be found in the vineyards, located in the elective areas for the production of Nebbiolo grapes, such as the Cannubi, Liste, Brunate and Cerequio Cru.
