Fontanafredda
Rose, forest berry, dark spice and crushed mint aromas shape the nose on this fragrant red. The fullbodied, delicious palate features juicy Marasca cherry, strawberry compote and star anise alongside youthfully tight, finegrained tannins. It closes on a white pepper note. It's elegant but still young, so give it a few more years to fully integrate and develop. Drink 2025–2032. KERIN O’KEEFE
In Barolo, the 2017 vintage will be remembered above all for the late spring frost that left the vine-dressers shivering, for the somewhat extreme weather conditions, with a hot summer, but fortunately characterised by cool nights, and a fair amount of rain in early September that allowed the Nebbiolo to ripen perfectly. The wines? Simply unforgettable. rated with top marks by the experts. Rich Barolo, also in terms of colour, with excellent tannic concentration and perfect overall balance. The one we offer here, Vigna La Rosa 2017 from Fontanafredda, is a fine example. Good today but capable of evolving well in the cellar for an eternity, this Barolo DOCG should always be bought in several units. One bottle could be opened immediately. The others, on the other hand, should remain jealously guarded in the cellar waiting for the right occasions. Matured in medium-capacity oak casks for around 24 months before being bottled for a further 12 months in glass, this Barolo now has a beautiful ruby red colour with garnet highlights. The bouquet is ample, gentle but intense. Hints of withered rose, violet, tobacco, undergrowth and light vanilla are easily discernible. In the mouth, then, the texture of the tannins is dense and thick. The entry is soft, almost velvety, and then explodes into a sensation of fruit well balanced by acidic freshness. The aftertaste is very long and rich in flavour. A perfect meditation wine, perhaps paired with a chocolate dessert, it is also a perfect Barolo for the whole meal. The important thing is that the menu is the right one. Based on red meats, with long cooking times.
Founded by the first King of Italy in 1858. This inscription on the Fontanafredda website is enough to give a sense of a company that to define as "historic" is almost reductive. Fontanafredda was born out of a love story. It was in fact a gift from Vittorio Emanuele II to his beloved Rosa Vercellana, the famous "bella Rosina". Beyond this ante litteram gossip, however, Fontanafredda has always been a point of reference for regional and Italian viticulture in general. In fact, many curious records belong to this winery. The first vineyard in Barolo was purchased in 1866, and the first vinification took place in 1870. In 1886, Fontanafredda's Barolo wines reached America, and in 1887, the first cement tanks in Europe were built. Finally, 1959 saw the production of the first classic method sparkling wine, the forerunner of Alta Langa DOCG. The last step in the glorious history of this winery, after its acquisition by Oscar Farinetti and Luca Baffigo, is in 2018. Since that year, the company has been producing certified organic wines. Today, Fontanafredda, which exports to over 60 countries around the world, can count on a complex of 120 hectares of vineyards. And in its cellars there are over 2.5 million bottles of Barolo waiting to be put on the market. Long live... Fontanafredda!
