PELASSA DANIELE / Azienda Agricola DANIELE PELASSA - Casali Castellero, 2 - 12046 - Montà d'Alba (CN) - ITALIA
Showing elegant intensity and a long, polished mouthfeel, the Pelassa 2017 Barolo defies the hot vintage to bring nuance and complexity. This is an impressive effort that exhibits dark fruit, mild spice and lots of earthy intensity with a hint of black truffle and forest floor.
Decent, balanced nose of dried raspberry and cedar. Same profile on the medium-bodied palate with some firm, fine tannin that cuts it short. This may fill out a little with a year in bottle, but probably not enough substance here to merit cellar space. Drink or hold.
Its bottle and simple, elegant label are the best calling card for a wine that is certainly not afraid to be brought to the most important tables. We are talking about an elegant Barolo DOCG by Pelassa, produced (obviously) from 100% Nebbiolo grapes. In this case of the three most common varieties, Michet, Lampia and Rosè. Mid-hill vineyards, located at an altitude of 350 metres above sea level, harvested by hand in the second half of October. Super-traditional vinification follows, with fermentation lasting 15-20 days at a controlled temperature. The must is stirred with the dèlastage system to maximise the extraction of colour and varietal aromas. Then, after malolactic fermentation, the wine is placed in Slavonian and French oak Tonneaux, with weekly topping up of the level and tasting trials. As it should be, the wine rests in the cellar for no less than 3 years, 2 of which in wood and one in the bottle. This is the only way to reach the right degree of maturity and in the glass one discovers a wine characterised by a beautiful garnet red colour, with an ethereal bouquet of tar and hints of dried flowers. In the mouth, it is rich, balanced and endowed with ripe tannins. Harmonious red, with great distinction and intensity. A wine of remarkable class, with exceptional richness and typicity. Perfect with game, it is simply excellent with truffles. To appreciate it at its best, in addition to the right temperature and the correct service, its producers also suggest tasting it while the Symphony No. 1 Op. 68 in C major by Johannes Brahms is playing in the room. Will it be true? Try it, to believe...
Situated in Montà d'Alba, the Pelassa winery leads vineyards in the Roero and Verduno, for the production of Barolo. Mario founded the Pelassa company in 1960 at the end of his military service. Today, it is run by the whole family, with Maria Teresa, known as Teresina, who has always been at Mario's side, and her sons Davide and Daniele, in the vineyard and cellar respectively. A scrupulous work of selection and clonal programming within the new plantings, and great efforts for investments in the cellar, guarantee the enhancement of the quality of the grapes harvested and the achievement of the objective of producing wines that have a full wine-vineyard-terroir correspondence. It is no coincidence that in recent years the company has concentrated mainly on the cultivation of the three varieties that are best suited to the typical soils of the area: Arneis, Nebbiolo and Barbera.
