Bottled by Michele Chiarlo S.r.l. - Calamandrana - Italy
Produced in Italy
A firm, chewy Barolo with chocolate and walnut aromas and flavors. Full body and round texture at the end. Needs two or three years to open. Try after 2022.
A garnet red that is not at all compact in the glass, Michele Chiarlo's Barolo Palás is a true triumph in terms of aroma. It opens with evident notes of wild berries, accompanied by black fruits, such as blackberries and raspberries, and hints of underbrush that remind one of mushrooms, which, with a bit of suggestion, can also make one think of truffles. If you are patient enough to wait for the oxygen to do its work, you will then find very pleasant notes of tobacco and roasting, touches of dark chocolate and ethereal nuances. The mouthfeel of the tannin is velvety and pleasantly harmonious. Palás represents the label of tradition for Michele Chiarlo, produced with grapes from vineyards located in various plots, with different characteristics. This is followed by a long period of aging in large barrels that make it particularly balanced and long-lived.
It was 1956 when Michele Chiarlo founded his winery in Calamandrana, in the heart of the Asti area, and began producing his first Barolo. Strictly family-run, the winery developed thanks to the important purchases made in the best areas of the Langhe, including Cerequio and Cannubi. Today Michele Chiarlo can count on an estate of about 110 hectares of vineyards, 60 of which are owned and the remaining 50 under long-term lease. The total production exceeds one million bottles per year but, unlike many companies that have lost their strong family connotation over time, Michele Chiarlo, sons and grandsons are always in full control of production. Today the challenge is to achieve full sustainability. This objective has been pursued since the 1990s, when the first applications of integrated pest management, selective plant protection products and other natural practices began.
