The Michele Chiarlo 2017 Barbera d'Asti le Orme (packaged in a screw cap bottle) is a light and informal expression to order at the local trattoria or pizzeria. The wine is tight and lean, with a pretty bouquet of wild cherry, dried blackberry and sweet almond. The wine is mild in terms of extraction and subdued in terms of the grape's naturally high acidity. These qualities make it so food friendly.
A ton of bright, primary fruit makes an entrance, characterized by raspberries and dark cherries. Medium-bodied with very little tannin, but the driven acidity makes this immediately drinkable and surely excellent with food. Drink now.
This juicy red opens with aromas of ripe dark-skinned berry, star anise and a whiff of forest floor. Rounded, chewy and fresh, the savory palate doles out mature Marasca cherry, cranberry, licorice and a hint of truffle alongside smooth tannins. Enjoy through 2022. KERIN O’KEEFE
Barbera is, by definition, an immediate and pleasant wine. Easy to match and generally characterized by good value for money. No exception is this Sedici months Le Ormedi Michele Chiarlo, the result of the vinification of grapes from different plots of land, all characterized by a clear soil rich in microelements. The sixteen months refer to the duration of the refinement of the wine before bottling. The result is a pleasant ruby red glass of wine with violet reflections. The nose is dominated by fruity notes, from raspberry to cherry, followed by a slight spicy texture. In the mouth it confirms itself as particularly fruity, well supported by a distinct acidic note, typical for Barbera. Drinkable and absolutely pleasant, this wine has very well-integrated tannins and a body that is not excessively heavy. Perfect for an evening with friends, it is the right wine to accompany a typical Piedmontese lunch or dinner.
It was 1956 when Michele Chiarlo founded his winery in Calamandrana, in the heart of the Asti area, and began producing his first Barolo. Strictly family-run, the winery developed thanks to the important purchases made in the best areas of the Langhe, including Cerequio and Cannubi. Today Michele Chiarlo can count on an estate of about 110 hectares of vineyards, 60 of which are owned and the remaining 50 under long-term lease. The total production exceeds one million bottles per year but, unlike many companies that have lost their strong family connotation over time, Michele Chiarlo, sons and grandsons are always in full control of production. Today the challenge is to achieve full sustainability. This objective has been pursued since the 1990s, when the first applications of integrated pest management, selective plant protection products and other natural practices began.
