The Orlando Abrigo 2017 Barbera d'Alba Roreto is a robust and ripe expression. The wine opens to an inky dark appearance, and it follows through with dark aromas of cherry confit, blackberry preserves, scorched earth and Indian spice. The Barbera grape was pushed to its limits in this hot and dry vintage, and although it loves the sunshine, this wine walks right up to the line. Thankfully, that varietal acidity kicks in to balance out the warm-climate aromas. It pulls it back from the edge.
Plenty of berry, light tar and burnt-orange aromas and flavors. Medium body. Juicy fruit and a flavorful finish. Drink or hold.
Centuries have not gone by since the world of wine looked down on Barbera, thinking that it was not a noble enough wine to be compared with the noble sons of Nebbiolo. Yet today there are many who produce Barbera worthy of note, such as this Barbera d'Alba Roreto proposed by Abrigo Orlando. A sparkling wine, simple but not ordinary. A nice glass capable of accompanying mid-afternoon snacks or a dinner based on typical regional dishes, starting with boiled meats, served with all their sauces. This Barbera is the result of a careful processing of grapes harvested at a perfect state of ripeness. Soft pressing and maceration for a few days. Then the refinement that is organized by dividing the mass of wine into two parts. One is put into barriques, while the other is left to rest in large 25-hectoliter barrels for 6-8 months. The result? The right mix of elegance and immediacy. A bottle to be uncorked without any worries on a thousand occasions.
The Abrigo family is one of the many families of the Langa dedicated to wine for generations. A family in which traditions are handed down from father to son and where each generation has the task of safeguarding what has been done, improving it where possible, but above all making sure that the family business always keeps up with the times. So when in 1988 Giovanni Abrigo began to collaborate with his father, his first thought was to improve the technological aspect and to enlarge the company surface with the purchase of lands and vineyards. Today the farm directly manages about 20 hectares of vineyards. And its wines receive international awards and recognition.
