The Orlando Abrigo 2017 Barbaresco Meruzzano is a pretty and delicate expression with aromas of forest berry, rose hip and root licorice. These results are tonic and tight, and the wine shows the balance and energy that gives you confidence in its staying power and ample food-pairing versatility. The tannins are extra tight at this young stage, and I would suggest another year or two of cellar aging.
Complex aromas of smoke, cedar and berries with some orange peel, following through to a medium body, firm and silky tannins and a juicy finish. Subtle and fresh for the vintage. Drink in 2022 and onwards.
Every self-respecting sommelier knows that in the Langa there is a King, Barolo, and a Queen, Barbaresco, they share the production area, the Langa (between Barolo and Barbaresco there are only a few kilometers), and the grape variety of origin, the noble Nebbiolo. Compared to Barolo, Barbaresco is usually less austere and less masculine. More elegant, you might say. Certainly nicer. Abrigo Orlando's Meruzzano is created from a harvest when perfectly ripe, followed by maceration of the skins for 20/25 days. After racking, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and is aged in 500-liter tonneaux for more than a year. Before the wine is finally put on the market, it matures for another 6/8 months in the cellar. Only at the end of this long production process, Barbaresco DOCG Meruzzano is ready to face the test of the glass. In the glass it has a beautiful garnet red color, with a rich bouquet that recalls notes of cherries and red fruits. In the mouth it is compact, with well-presented but soft tannins that tend to age for many years, making this Piedmontese red a great wine for aging. The advice is to buy more than one bottle, to be opened over the years to appreciate its evolution over time.
The Abrigo family is one of the many families of the Langa dedicated to wine for generations. A family in which traditions are handed down from father to son and where each generation has the task of safeguarding what has been done, improving it where possible, but above all making sure that the family business always keeps up with the times. So when in 1988 Giovanni Abrigo began to collaborate with his father, his first thought was to improve the technological aspect and to enlarge the company surface with the purchase of lands and vineyards. Today the farm directly manages about 20 hectares of vineyards. And its wines receive international awards and recognition.
