BERSANO VINI SRL, P.ZZA DANTE 21, 14049, NIZZA MONFERRATO (AT)
The other side of Piedmont. Barbaresco DOCG, 100% Nebbiolo from the heart of the Piedmont Langhe. Elegance and complexity typical of one of Italy's noblest wines. The one proposed here by Bersano comes from vineyards that insist on particularly suitable, calcareous-clayey soils composed of marl and sand deposited over millions of years. This unique terroir, combined with a temperate climate with continental influences, gives the Nebbiolo grapes distinctive characteristics. The vineyards, cultivated at about 400 metres above sea level, enjoy optimal exposure that favours the complete ripening of the grapes. Harvesting is manual and selective and takes place between the first and second ten days of October. In the cellar, the grapes undergo a long maceration in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. During this phase, the extraction of colour and tannins from the skins gives the wine structure and complexity. At the end of alcoholic fermentation, the wine also undergoes malolactic fermentation, which softens the tannins and gives the wine a more harmonious profile. The final stage, maturation, takes place in large oak casks for a minimum of 18 months, followed by a further period of bottle ageing to evolve and reach its expressive peak. Deep garnet red in colour, on the nose this Barbaresco offers an enveloping bouquet that opens on notes of morello cherry, blackcurrant, cocoa and violet, enriched by hints of tar, a warm and intriguing note. In the mouth, Barbaresco Mantico conquers with its richness and persistence. The tannins, although vigorous, are well integrated and give the wine a harmonious balance. Hints of leather, liquorice and pepper blend elegantly with notes of dried violets and ripe plums, creating a persistent and satisfying finish.
More than a century has passed since the Bersano winery was founded. The precise date is 1907, as proudly recalled on the home page of the company website. We are in Nizza Monferrato, the heart of the Barbera d'Asti district. The real turning point, however, came only a few years later, in 1935, when Arturo Bersano, a rare man in terms of intelligence and culture, a lawyer by family pride and a vine grower by passion, took control of the Cantina, which until then had been a family-run business and only sold its wines regionally. His work was inspired by the motto 'if you want to drink well, buy a vineyard'. A philosophy that, like a true pioneer, he would follow for the rest of his life. Thus over time, Bersano and, after him, the Massimelli and Soave families, owners of the Casa Vinicola, consolidated an impressive farmstead. Here, without forgetting the strength of tradition, quality grapes are still produced from which typical wines of the region are made. Particular attention has always been paid to the wood for ageing, the company's true asset. Cantine Bersano, in fact, keep large oak casks and tonneaux where, thanks to the constant temperature and humidity, the wines mature slowly for years. Today, Bersano is considered one of the most important wineries in Piedmont.
