Shows balance and firmness for a 2017 with plums and strawberries and some spice and chocolate character. It’s full and flavorful. Juicy finish. Better after 2022.
Earthy aromas of truffle, leather, dried herb and game follow over to the rounded palate along with mature black cherry, blood orange, clove and a salty note. Taut, close-grained tannins provide support. Drink 2021–2029. KERIN O’KEEFE
Among the Nebbiolos of Langa, Barbaresco is the one known for its great finesse. Less muscular and powerful than Barolo, the Nebbiolo grown on the hills around the village of Barbaresco has a greater olfactory finesse, even softer and more velvety tannins and a long and pleasant persistence. Palás is a worthy representative of this type. An extremely pleasant wine, excellent now but which promises to be able to mature a lot more, evolving in terms of aromas and flavours. In the glass it is a refined garnet red colour of beautiful transparency. The nose impresses with the breadth of its bouquet where fruity notes and spicy hints alternate seamlessly. But it is in the mouth that the Palás gives the most satisfaction, presenting a full body, very pleasant, well supported by ripe and perfectly silky tannins. In closing, a lingering finish.
It was 1956 when Michele Chiarlo founded his winery in Calamandrana, in the heart of the Asti area, and began producing his first Barolo. Strictly family-run, the winery developed thanks to the important purchases made in the best areas of the Langhe, including Cerequio and Cannubi. Today Michele Chiarlo can count on an estate of about 110 hectares of vineyards, 60 of which are owned and the remaining 50 under long-term lease. The total production exceeds one million bottles per year but, unlike many companies that have lost their strong family connotation over time, Michele Chiarlo, sons and grandsons are always in full control of production. Today the challenge is to achieve full sustainability. This objective has been pursued since the 1990s, when the first applications of integrated pest management, selective plant protection products and other natural practices began.
