This wine represents a selection of fruit from Michele Chiarlo's La Court estate. A pure expression of Barbera, the 2017 Nizza Cipressi is an explosive and exuberant wine with big, black fruit and lots of warm-climate thickness or density. The wine is fermented in steel and aged for one year in large oak casks. During the hot 2017 vintage, leaves were only pulled from one side of the vineyard rows to allow for extra shade covering the fruit. At its core, this wine is black, bold and opulent.

    • James Suckling 90

A hedonistic red with loads of elderberries, vanilla, plum essence and dark chocolate. Full-bodied and decadent on the palate with lots of wood, but some good acidity to balance things out. We appreciate the concentration attained here, given the often light nature of this variety. Still, less would have been more. Drink now.

    • Wine Spectator 92

Rich and ripe, featuring a mouthful of black cherry, blackberry, pomegranate and spice flavors. Dense, yet remains balanced, with bright acidity and firm tannins for support. Shows terrific purity and length. Drink now through 2025. 5,000 cases made, 300 cases imported. — BS

      Nizza DOCG "I Cipressi" 2022
    • The Nizza DOCG denomination represents the peak of excellence of Piedmontese Barbera. Here, a magical mix of soils, climate and exposure give Barbera a very special texture and a unique ability to age. Michele Chiarlo produces this Barbera by carefully selecting the best grapes from the La Court estate. Searching out the best exposed rows, those capable of producing healthy and perfectly ripe bunches. It is no coincidence that the harvest is strictly manual and the selection of the right bunches is repeated again in the cellar, before moving on to the actual vinification phase. The result is a wine characterized by an intense ruby red colour. On the nose, notes of red fruit, ripe cherry, raspberry and sweet memories of tobacco. In the mouth it reveals itself to be a full-bodied wine, well-structured, round and above all very persistent.

It was 1956 when Michele Chiarlo founded his winery in Calamandrana, in the heart of the Asti area, and began producing his first Barolo. Strictly family-run, the winery developed thanks to the important purchases made in the best areas of the Langhe, including Cerequio and Cannubi. Today Michele Chiarlo can count on an estate of about 110 hectares of vineyards, 60 of which are owned and the remaining 50 under long-term lease. The total production exceeds one million bottles per year but, unlike many companies that have lost their strong family connotation over time, Michele Chiarlo, sons and grandsons are always in full control of production. Today the challenge is to achieve full sustainability. This objective has been pursued since the 1990s, when the first applications of integrated pest management, selective plant protection products and other natural practices began.
