  • Robert Parker 93

The 2016 Barolo Tortoniano is an accessible and forthcoming wine that gives you the complexity and nuance of the Nebbiolo grape with a fruit-forward and food-friendly personality. There is a dry and astringent quality to the tannins that might need to smooth itself out with a few more years of cellar aging. Otherwise, the wine would pair with ravioli stuffed with minced meat and topped with extra cheese.

  • James Suckling 93

Ripe and generous with currants, plums and spice, as well as chocolate character. It’s full-bodied with round tannins and a firm, racy finish. Drink or hold.

  • Wine Enthusiast 95

Earthy and delicious, this opens with aromas of ripe dark-skinned berry, new leather, truffle and crushed botanical herb. The structured, expressive palate delivers crushed black cherry, mature raspberry, tobacco and the barest whiff of game alongside tightly knit, velvety tannins. It's well balanced, with fresh acidity. Drink 2024–2031. KERIN O’KEEFE

    Barolo DOCG "Tortoniano"
  • Tortoniano is a refined Barolo DOCG produced by Michele Chiarlo. Its name refers to its area of origin. The Nebbiolo grapes that make up this wine, in fact, grow on soils known as Tortonian soils that traditionally produce wines of great complexity and elegance. It is aged for a minimum of 3 years, 24 months of which are spent in barrels of varying sizes, and before release it is left to mature for a few months in the bottle. In the glass it is a beautiful deep ruby red colour. On the nose, it is vast and elegant. It ranges from notes of red fruit to rose petals, with a nice reminder of spice and balsamic notes. In the mouth it is well balanced, with silky tannins, and a long, pleasant, elegant finish.

It was 1956 when Michele Chiarlo founded his winery in Calamandrana, in the heart of the Asti area, and began producing his first Barolo. Strictly family-run, the winery developed thanks to the important purchases made in the best areas of the Langhe, including Cerequio and Cannubi. Today Michele Chiarlo can count on an estate of about 110 hectares of vineyards, 60 of which are owned and the remaining 50 under long-term lease. The total production exceeds one million bottles per year but, unlike many companies that have lost their strong family connotation over time, Michele Chiarlo, sons and grandsons are always in full control of production. Today the challenge is to achieve full sustainability. This objective has been pursued since the 1990s, when the first applications of integrated pest management, selective plant protection products and other natural practices began.
