Cormelò, IGT Terrazze Retiche from Sondrio, is a fine red wine proposed by Rivetti & Lauro, a young Valtellina company that loves to experiment. In this case, for example, the classic Nebbiolo, or Chiavennasca, as it is called in these parts, is combined with the Prince of international red grape varieties, Merlot. The grapes come from Valgella, in the heart of Valtellina. We are in Teglio, in the province of Sondrio. Here the harvest is done strictly by hand; after all, it is impossible to think of mechanizing this stage in vineyards that climb steep walls. Destemming and fermentation in small stainless steel tanks precede the delicate phase of wine maturation, which in this case takes place in 30-hectoliter barrels, tonneaux and barriques of French and American oak, first and second passage. About 18 months are necessary to reach the right maturity. At that point you discover a wine characterized by a beautiful ruby red color of medium intensity, with an intense aroma of red fruits. In the mouth, however, one is pleasantly surprised by the richness of the body and the fresh, balanced taste. Excellent with traditional Valtellina dishes, including pizzoccheri, but also with barbecued red meat main courses.
Rivetti & Lauro is a beautiful winery born from an idea of Alberto Rivetti and Dino Lauro, together to give life to a modern winemaking project. New agronomic techniques in harmony with the environment, attention to detail and ancient craftsmanship allow the two entrepreneurial friends to harvest superior quality grapes year after year. What they certainly do not lack is a good dose of courage, necessary to choose to grow Nebbiolo grapes, here called Chiavennasca, on the steep slopes of the Rhaetian Alps. In this remote corner of Lombardy, each row of vines is rooted in small plots of earthen soil painstakingly wrested from the mountain thanks to typical terracing built over the years. Instead, the winery's headquarters are in Palazzo Torelli, in a beautiful building located in Tirano's historic center. Here the wines mature slowly, until they reach the right complexity. After much effort and years of waiting, the effort of the winemakers is amply repaid the moment the first bottle is uncorked to pour a glass.
