Among the indigenous Calabrian varieties, Gaglioppo plays a leading role. For a long time neglected, today it is finally experiencing a period of great splendour. This is thanks above all to the region's talented producers who, aware of its potential, have placed it at the centre of an important promotion campaign. Such as Ippolito 1845, which has made a personal boast of the valorisation of the region's rich ampelographic heritage. Thus were born wines such as this Colli del Mancuso, Cirò DOC Riserva, produced from pure Gaglioppo grapes. The grapes, left to ripen in the hills until the second half of October, are carefully selected at harvest time. Vinification begins with a long maceration phase on the skins, thanks to which the Gaglioppo yields all its colour and best aromas to the wine. Then, once the vinification phase is over, it continues with a slow maturation in oak barrels for a period of no less than 12 months. This passage gives the finished wine great elegance and an even richer bouquet, with aromas of morello cherry, plum, spices and vanilla. The palate reveals a beautifully structured red, pleasantly soft and finely tannic.
A long history, made up of hard work and great passion, for wine and for their homeland. This sentence is enough to clearly frame what lies behind the historic Ippolito 1845 brand. We are in Calabria, a borderland, in an old country cottage in the marina of Cirò. This is where Vincenzo Ippolito set up his winery, the same winery that today, with its more than 170 years of history, represents the oldest winery in Calabria. The Ippolito 1845 winery includes an agricultural estate of more than 100 hectares, distributed close to the Ionian Sea, with vineyards in the classic Cirò area. The company's focus has always been on enhancing the rich regional ampelographic heritage. Starting with Gaglioppo, Greco Bianco, Calabrese and Pecorello. Good results are only achieved through hard work and in Ippolito's cellar nothing is left to chance. Innovative techniques and careful control of all production processes allow the company to put on the market, year after year, wines that are elegant but deeply rooted in their territory. From the old farmhouse in Cirò, today the wines of the Ippolito 1845 company arrive on the tables of wine lovers halfway around the world.
