Bright red fruit with tinges of violets, tobacco and citrus rind. Medium-bodied with lightly chewy tannins, bright acidity and more orange rind and a twist of nutty vanilla right at the end. Traditional feel to this. Tasty, too. Try after 222.

Barolo DOCG del Comune di La Morra 2020
  • Barolo, yes. But not just any Barolo. This one proposed by Ellena, in fact, bears on the label the name Barolo del Comune di La Morra. The centre, then, of that small world made up of prestigious wines that are born in a territory rich in facets. Each hillock, each ridge, has different soils and different exposures that allow the Nebbiolo grapes, the only one allowed by the regulations, to ripen in different ways and develop unique aromas and scents. Vigneto Ascheri, about one hectare, is made up of very old plants. The first plantings date back to 1970. With a south-west/west exposure, this vineyard enjoys a beneficial temperature range between day and night, thanks to its location at about 300 metres above sea level. After vinification, for the necessary maturation phase, Ellena chooses small oak barrels, French barriques, where the wine is left to rest for about 30 months. The result is a red wine with a beautiful personality, with fine and elegant tannins. Perfect with meat dishes, excellent with mixed boiled meats or the classic "tajarin all'uovo". It is the glass that can also accompany a nice evening of conversation with friends.

We are in the municipality of La Morra. One of those places that in the mind of every good wine lover rhymes with Barolo. The property covers about 15 hectares, 7 of which are planted with vines, 6 with hazelnuts and 2 with woodland. Founded by Francesco and Giovanni Ellena, the current farm derives from an original property purchased in 1966, after having worked for years as sharecroppers on various farms in La Morra. For many years the farm was part of an agricultural cooperative, but the dream of returning to making wine from their own grapes never faded in the family members. So, with the 2009 harvest, after having renovated part of the historic farmhouse and the 19th century cellar for the ageing of the Baroli, the Ellena family returned to winemaking on their own. Today three generations work side by side, interweaving ancient traditions and innovation.
