I like the lightly spicy, forest-fruit and leafy character that colors the ripe red fruit from start to finish here. Medium-to full-bodied with orangey, spicy freshness and only slightly firm tannins. Chestnut-honey notes come through on the finish. With a bit of air, this shows some real complexity and progression. Delicious even now, but will be better in 223.
Lovers of the noblest of Piedmontese wines, Barolo, are certainly not satisfied with tasting just any wine. True experts, in fact, know how to distinguish a Barolo from one area, from one commune, from that of another area. And they often have preferences. It is no coincidence that the label often includes an indication of the vineyard of origin of the grapes. As in this case. Barolo DOCG Ascheri, proposed by Ellena, is a wine that comes from the processing of pure Nebbiolo grapes, coming from the Ascheri vineyard, in the commune of La Morra. After the manual harvest, the grapes are quickly brought to the cellar to be transformed. The maceration phase, necessary to extract all the colour and aromas from the skins, lasts in this case for about 60 days. Then, once fermentation is complete, the wine is left to mature in barrels for about 36 months. Three years followed by at least another 9 months of bottle ageing. Only then is the wine ready to be sold. Good immediately, of course, but also able to wait a few years in the cellar, acquiring more and more special and interesting characters as the months go by. The colour is an intense garnet red, lively and brilliant, with slight orange reflections. The nose is elegant and powerful. It evokes hints of dog rose, mint and tobacco which, with time, evolve into spicy scents of truffle and leather. In the mouth it is full, round, with great structure and good balance. Roasts and braised meats are the ideal accompaniment. It is also excellent with the classic Piedmontese bollito misto, with all its accompanying sauces.
We are in the municipality of La Morra. One of those places that in the mind of every good wine lover rhymes with Barolo. The property covers about 15 hectares, 7 of which are planted with vines, 6 with hazelnuts and 2 with woodland. Founded by Francesco and Giovanni Ellena, the current farm derives from an original property purchased in 1966, after having worked for years as sharecroppers on various farms in La Morra. For many years the farm was part of an agricultural cooperative, but the dream of returning to making wine from their own grapes never faded in the family members. So, with the 2009 harvest, after having renovated part of the historic farmhouse and the 19th century cellar for the ageing of the Baroli, the Ellena family returned to winemaking on their own. Today three generations work side by side, interweaving ancient traditions and innovation.
