Basilisco Società Agricola Srl, Via delle Cantine 22, 85022 Barile (PZ)
The other face of Aglianico, we could say. Basilisco, in fact, although owned by Campana Feudi di San Gregorio, is a Lucanian company. 'Basilisco', which in Greek means 'little king', the title corresponding to the office of governor given during the Byzantine rule of 'Basilicata'. Whose toponym in turn means land of the Basileus, i.e. of the King. Aglianico del Vulture Superiore DOCG, this wine comes from a pure processing of grapes from a single 4-hectare vineyard in the municipality of Barile. We are about 500-600 metres above sea level, on soils of volcanic, tufaceous and clayey origin. Fermentation and maceration in steel tanks for 25/30 days. After vinification, the wine matures for at least 12 months in barriques, tonneaux, and French oak barrels, partly new and partly second and third passage. Then, after bottling, follows a further long period of rest in the cellar. Ruby red with intense purple hues, this Aglianico reveals a balsamic aroma, with complex aromas of berries, plum, blackberry and cherry. Elegant and persistent, it is the wine to uncork to accompany a rich menu of savoury meats. Excellent with game and medium to long matured cheeses.
There is a subtle fil-rouge that unites everything that has been done at Feudi di San Gregorio since its birth in 1986. It is the desire to make the most of the inestimable heritage of indigenous grape varieties of the Campania tradition. Starting with Greco, Fiano and Aglianico, true regional flagships. Today, the company can count on a total of 300 hectares of vineyards, divided into over 800 plots that differ in altitude, exposure and slope. A marvellous natural jigsaw puzzle that perfectly expresses the biodiversity of the land, and is capable of producing extraordinary crus. It is currently one of the leading wineries in Southern Italy, with exports covering more than 50 countries worldwide. The experience gained over the years therefore led the Capaldo family, who have always been the mind and soul of the company, to decide to explore the wine potential of other regions of Italy. Thus the 'Tenute Capaldo' project was born, encompassing a complex of wineries ranging from DUBL, also from Campania, to Campo alle Comete in Tuscany, passing through Basilisco, an organic winery in Vulture, Ognissole, a biodynamic winery in Apulia, Sirch, in the Colli Orientali del Friuli, and ending with FedeGraziani, a small jewel on the slopes of Etna. All realities united by the same values: to produce wines of excellent quality while respecting the territory they belong to.
