Notes of dried herbs, ash, burnt blackberries and tar, as well as a hint of leather. Full-bodied and earthy with bramble-like tannins and a pretty sweet-and-sour character. Drink from 2022.
Aromas of toasted oak, baked plum and mocha lead the nose. The aromas carry over to the firm palate together with notes of star anise and clove. Close-grained tannins grip the finish. Drink through 2027. KERIN O’KEEFE
It belongs to Feudi di San Gregorio's Eccellenze line. This Taurasi Riserva DOCG, Piano di Montevergine, is a perfect representative of its land. A pure Aglianico, this red wine of the territory, after vinification, matures for a long time in wood in order to round off the corners and achieve the necessary elegance and complexity. Almost two years, on average, spent in French oak barriques and large 50 hectolitre barrels of medium toasting. Then, after bottling, the wine remains for at least another two years in the cellar, waiting to reach the right maturity. Aglianico, after all, is certainly not a variety that is in a hurry to finish in the glass. So much waiting, however, is amply repaid when you uncork the bottle and pour the first glass. Deep ruby red in colour, the nose reveals fruity sensations of blackberry, plum and black cherry. Then balsamic and spicy notes. In the mouth it is soft, persuasive, mineral and balanced, with elegant tannins and a long lingering finish. Perfect with game, this red wine is also a satisfying accompaniment to mature cheeses and roast and grilled lamb.
There is a subtle fil-rouge that unites everything that has been done at Feudi di San Gregorio since its inception in 1986. It is the desire to make the most of the inestimable heritage of indigenous grape varieties in the Campania tradition. Starting with Greco, Fiano and Aglianico, the true regional flagships. Today the company can count on a total of 300 hectares of vineyards, divided into more than 800 plots that differ in altitude, exposure and slope. A marvellous natural jigsaw puzzle that perfectly expresses the biodiversity of the territory, and is capable of giving life to extraordinary cru. It is currently one of the leading wineries in Southern Italy, with exports covering more than 50 countries worldwide. The experience gained over the years has therefore led the Capaldo family, who have always been the mind and soul of the company, to decide to explore the winemaking potential of other regions of Italy. This led to the creation of the "Tenute Capaldo" project, a group of wineries ranging from DUBL, also in Campania, to Campo alle Comete in Tuscany, Basilisco, an organic winery in Vulture, Ognissole, a biodynamic winery in Puglia, Sirch, in the Colli Orientali del Friuli, and FedeGraziani, a small jewel on the slopes of Etna. All these wineries share the same values: producing excellent quality wines while respecting their territory.
