The Brunello di Montalcino Pian delle Vigne works very nicely all said and done. It presents the light and undertone character of the vintage against the ripe and more opulent style that is associated with this vineyard site at the lower parts of southern Montalcino. These two elements result in a balanced and forthright performance. The wine opens to a dark garnet color and ripe aromas of dark cherry and blackberry followed by potting soil, rose bud and grilled herb. Some 150,000 bottles were made.
Aromas of tar, spice and dried berries follow through to a medium body with stewed fruit and chewy tannins. Medium body. Juicy finish. Drink now.
Aromas of stewed plum, pressed violet, tobacco and a whiff of leather lead the way. The medium-bodied, linear palate offers succulent black cherry, crushed herb and star anise alongside fine-grained tannins and bright acidity. Drink 2020–2029. KERIN O’KEEFE
Features black cherry, plum, fruitcake, leather and earth notes abound, which are matched to a supple texture starting out then cede ground to firm tannins. Hints of coffee and chocolate emerge on the finish. Best from 2020 through 2028.
Pian delle Vigne is the Brunello di Montalcino from the house of Antinori, a family that certainly needs no introduction. After all, it has a tradition in wine of over 600 years. Produced, according to the regulations, exclusively from Sangiovese grapes, it is a wine of great elegance and finesse that acquires more and more class and complexity as the years go by. It comes from a careful selection of grapes, followed by a slow alcoholic fermentation at controlled temperature and a malolactic conversion in order to round the edges of the Sangiovese impetuous character. This is followed by aging in large oak barrels for over 2 years. In the glass it is a beautiful deep ruby red colour. On the nose, an ample bouquet of red fruit, roasted and evolved scents and a light note of spice. On the palate, however, it is soft and silky. Nice structure and perfect balance. A perfect glass right now but not afraid to wait a few more years to give us even more satisfaction.
The Antinori family has been dedicated to wine production for more than six hundred years. From when, in 1385, Giovanni di Piero Antinori became part of the Florentine Guild of Vintners. Since then as many as 26 generations of the family have guided the destiny of the group, which today is one of the best known and best loved worldwide. The head of the company today is Marchese Piero Antinori, with the support of his three daughters, Albiera, Allegra and Alessia, all of whom are personally involved in the company's activities. The family's historic Tuscan and Umbrian estates have been joined over time by several others. Everywhere the aim of the Antinori family is to make the most of the local "terroir", seeking to produce fascinating and memorable wines. In this context, we cannot forget the great family Supertuscans, "Solaia" and "Tignanello", or the Chianti Classico wines that represent a quality reference point for all wine lovers.
