Antiche Vie, Chianti DOCG by Pietro Beconcini, is an organic wine that truly represents its territory. It is produced in San Miniato, at about 150 metres above sea level. This municipality boasts a wine-making history that dates back over two thousand years, with evidence spanning the Roman, Lombard and Swabian eras. The vineyards extend over soils composed of Pliocene clays and sands, rich in salt and limestone, residues of an ancient ocean that once covered the region. Antiche Vie is made from a blend of native vines: Sangiovese, Malvasia Nera, Canaiolo and Trebbiano, the latter a white grape, according to the ancient tradition of Chianti, where small percentages of white grapes were used to add freshness and complexity to the wine. The wine is made in concrete tanks using indigenous yeasts, with a 20-day maceration on the skins. The wine is then aged for 6 months in concrete and refined in the bottle for a further 4 months. The use of cement allows for natural micro-oxygenation, preserving the aromatic integrity and freshness of the wine. A lively ruby red colour, the nose is surprisingly vinous with hints of violets and ripe cherries. In the mouth it is pleasantly round, full-bodied, with a marked acidity and a pleasant persistence. Thanks to its versatility, this Chianti from Beconcini goes well with pasta dishes, white meats, fresh cheeses, cured meats and even fish cooked in red wine (try it!). Its balanced acidity and soft tannins make it an excellent accompaniment to traditional Tuscan cuisine and Mediterranean dishes.
The Pietro Beconcini Farm is located in San Miniato, in the heart of Tuscany. Its history began in the 1950s, when the grandfather of the current owner, Leonardo Beconcini, managed to buy the land on which he worked as a sharecropper for the Marchesi Ridolfi family, thus becoming one of the first Tuscan farmers to leave the sharecropping system. Later, his son Pietro decided to dedicate himself entirely to the cultivation of vineyards and the production of wine, laying the foundations for the company we know today. One of the most fascinating aspects of the Beconcini winery is the introduction and promotion of Tempranillo, a typically Spanish grape variety, which has found a surprisingly congenial habitat in these lands. The discovery of ancient Tempranillo vines in San Miniato was unexpected and led the company to undertake a programme of research and experimentation. Today, thanks to its genetic characteristics, the Tempranillo of San Miniato produces very versatile grapes, suitable for long-aging wines that combine the typical softness of the vine with territorial characteristics such as Tuscan acidity and the flavour of calcareous soils. In addition to Tempranillo, however, the company also produces wines from traditional varieties, such as the ever-present Tuscan Sangiovese.
